Does that make you the first ecig supplier in New Zealand Michael?

Good luck with it, I hope it goes well.

Just a mention for you and anyone in a position to source and supply esmoking goodies -
I bet there's a decent size market for cases and carry bags for devices and juice. The ones currently available either don't carry all accessories required or are a bit naff. We're making do with all sorts of cases such as those for glasses, playstations, toiletries, etc. Something specifically designed for esmoking bits and pieces would be useful. Also home storage might have interest too such as fridge boxes for liquid and cartridges, childproof dropper bottles, something to keep kids and animals away from our nicotine. Also, storage for pg, vg, flavour bottles, maybe a desk tidy for all our atomisers and batteries and an 'octopus' type charger solution like Emps. Fill your shops up with custom goodies at reasonable prices and we'll buy if they do a good job.

Hi Kate,

No I'm not the first in New Zealand, there are a few others selling products here.

NZ is a difficult market at the moment because government legislation prevents the sale of anything but 0mg cartridges. Nicotine is viewed as being a medicine and only licensed suppliers, read big pharma, call sell it. To become registered as a medical supplier is hugely expensive, hundreds of thousands of $$ ... so it's unlikely I'll be doing that in the forseeable future.

I agree with you Kate, there is a market for all the storage hold-all organiser type things, the problem is locating them or getting a design made up, but I'm working on it :)

"Nicotine is viewed as being a medicine and only licensed suppliers, read big pharma, call sell it." I have a feeling that the UK will follow this route when they get their act together. If this happens, in my opinion it should be inexpensive and straightforward to become an approved supplier. Prove health & safety precautions have been taken including risk assessments; make sure training and quality control are adequate. It could be enforced in the same sort of way catering or chemical establishments are inspected. No need for mega big bucks, just a system that charges for safe licensing.

I'm sure as esmoking matures and suppliers prosper there will be better supply of custom/designer/bespoke goods available. You'll get there, you've picked a market that is sure to expand (in spite of legislation).

It might be possible to encourage the market in NZ by promoting the idea of using NRT (or snus, etc) in tandem with esmoking. Use two birds to kill one stone, lol. Together they are probably a satisfactory smoking alternative. It's a matter of convincing smokers that it's worth it.

NRT is completely in the hands of big pharma if it involves the use of nicotine. Up until quite recently gum and patches were only available on presription from a pharmacy. That has changed slightly and gum can be purchased from supermarkets, patches can not, they are still pharmacy only. Inhalers are still prescription only.

Snus is a banned import here, I tried importing some for my own use and it was confiscated by customs. I know other people that have had their shipments of snus pass through customs ok. So why mine was targetted I have no idea.

ASH is a powerful lobby group here that have the ear of the prime minister and the minister of health, both of whom are very anti smoking. ASH is changing it's stance from a tobacco free country to a nicotine free country. Although this is not yet in their published manifesto it has popped up in press releases and TV interviews.

Dr Murray Laugeson who is probably the leading world expert on electronic cigarettes is currently running a clinical trial here in NZ that is mostly funded by ruyan. This is the second such trial run by Dr Laugeson and we all anxiously await the report of his findings.

Whether the report will be presented to government or not I can't say, I hope it is. Dr Laugeson was for most of his career employed by the ministry of health and his specialist area was the smoking industry. My father worked in the tobacco industry in senior management postions and is a trained industrial chemist. He crossed swords with Dr Laugeson on more than one occassion.

Much as I would like to become a supplier here and help NZer's quit using tobacco products it's unlikely I will be able to do that for a very long time to come. So I will have to content myself with supplying you good people and others around the world who are becoming enlightened by this wonderful technology we have available to us.

It sounds like the authorities in NZ have a downer on nicotine. I'm not really surprised considering the history it has with smoking and poisons. It will take a lot of effort in the future to persuade other authorities not to follow the same line, NZ is just leading the way to the almost inevitable. We need to look to the long term where nicotine will not be easily accessible for most of us. I don't know how but we must try to make the formulation of our juice as healthy as possible.

It will be very interesting to see Dr Laugeson's completed research conclusions. I suspect that he'll find some minor sensitivity issues, some unsatisfied smokers who don't take to esmoking as an alternative and nothing else scary in the short term. Fingers crossed.

I think you've pretty much summed up my feelings about the results of Dr Laugeson's trial as well.

What I sincerely hope is that the products being used for the trial are not used as a basis for creating a cost benefit analysis. As we all know from our own experiances that result will not be a good one, it will show costs being far greater than they are in reality.
