This song is hard to say who the 'original' version was by, since it is based on the old spiritual, "Motherless Child"... but Richie Havens definitely made it his own, and it became known as "Freedom".

Sadly, we just lost him a couple of months ago, but this is his performance at the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock:




I had the pleasure of seeing him that same year on the Santa Monica Pier, with Janis Ian opening.
He played for about 3 hrs. and it was just magical... R.I.P. Richie

JJ, you do know these are supposed to be cover songs?

Even though it should be evident from what most of the other people have been posting, maybe we should clarify things for the benefit of all:

A Cover Song is one that has been "Covered" (ie: recorded and/or performed) by somebody other than the Artist who originally wrote it, and NOT the one that is on the cover of the album... which is normally called the "Title Track"... :)


Hey, that might be a good idea for another contest... Title Tracks!!
It would make it pretty hard, since not every album has one... :D
