Time to make some posts

Hey, everyone. I've been lurking in the background for a couple of months soaking up the knowledge and in the process have turned vaping into a bit of a hobby instead of just a smoking replacement. Got a nice start on a juice collection going and have progressed from the cig-alikes on to a couple of Egos and last week picked up an Itaste VV. During a recent visit to Alt Smoke I was shown the wonders that are mech mods. Now I'm thinking this could get expensive but I am enjoying it.

So here's my first question: I wrapped my first coil today, CE5 rebuildable atomizer, 5/4 wraps of 32 gauge Kanthal around the threads of a screw so they're nice and uniform. Compressed it a little and heat treated it, stuck it on the Itaste and it read 2.3 Ohms, just what I was looking for. I dry fired it and got a nice even glow across the entire coil, so far so good. Add some rolled cotton wick and a drop or two of juice, fire it again and nice plumes of vapor. Time to put the tank back together and fill it up. I take a couple of hits off it and think everything is ok. I come back to it a few hours later and suddenly it's reading 0.8 Ohms and barely firing. I take it off and put it back on, same thing. Take it off and put it on one of the Egos and it fires fine. Put it back on the Itaste and 2.3 Ohms again. A couple of hits later its back to 0.8. Repeat above tests and again works perfectly on the Ego and resistance goes back to 2.3 on the Itaste, but only for a couple of hits then back to 0.9. Anyone have any ideas on how this coil is shorting out and why firing it on the Ego seems to temporarily "fix" it? Makes no sense to me and unfortunately I can't take the head apart to look at it without wasting the tank of juice.

Hi and welcome to ECF,

I don't know that it is actually shorting on the iTaste, but it might be. Here are a couple of things to look at ... maybe one of them is the problem.

1. Check the center battery post on the iTaste and see if it can be pulled up just a little bit, it shouldn't have to go far. Sometimes that post gets pushed down just enough to not make full contact with the coil/tank. I use a straightened paperclip to just kind of wedge underneath it and lift it ever so slightly.

2. Check the 2 spots where you clipped the kanthal off the connector. Make sure that they are clipped as close to the base as possible. It could be that one (or both) of these wires are sticking out just ever so slightly and causing a short. If they aren't flush with the coil end, then try trimming them back even further.

As always ... YMMV!

Thanks, Dev, I'll check those things out. But if it were the battery post not making contact wouldn't that show a high resistance or an open instead of a low reading? I'm thinking you may be right about the wires sticking out a little and touching where they shouldn't be. Being my first coil I may not have trimmed them well enough.
