Hi guys, first post here although i've been lurking for a while now. Today is my 2 month no smoking anniversary, according my cool little iPad app i've saved over 300 euros and missed out on almost a 1000 cigarettes :)

I've been very happy with my Vision Spinner 2 and 2 Kanger aerotanks but since this whole vaping thing seems to be working for me I feel like I can safely invest in some new gear! So I think I want to go the rebuildable route. I've pretty much made my mind up (after watching a gazillion youtube vids) to get the Vaporshark dna30 mod and a Kayfun lite. I know it's a expensive setup but with the money i'm saving I can easily justify it :) I have a few questions though for the more experienced. Will the dna 30 board in the Vaporshark offer any kind of protection against shorts if I do mess up some of my first builds? And do I need to by a separate ohm meter to check the coils or will the ohm meter on the Vaporshark be fine to test the coil resistance?

Any help or advice will be appreciated :)

Welcome to the ECF boards, foo22.

You are good to go with the VS DNA. It has short circuit protection. The only thing that the Evolv DNA30 unit does not afford is reverse battery protection. Thus, you need to be place the battery in correctly.

Yes, you can use the VS to check your atty's resistance. However, it would be a good idea to have a separate ohm reader, as well.

I use my VS rDNA with a KayFun Lite quite often. It's an excellent daily combo.

Those are both pretty good products, just not together. You would need about a 2+ ohm coil in order to take full advantage of the DNA. The DNA will just switch to "unregulated" with the more common builds in a Kayfun.

    Welcome aboard

Yes I'd recommend a resistance meter. The dna30 fires when it checks resistance.

cartomizer and atomizer ohm meter | eBay

You'll also need Kanthal wire. I get mine from Temco. I use Kanthal A1 Round 32 and 30 gauge. 100' roll of each $10 with free shipping.

    Resistance Wire

    Sterile cotton balls from walmart/cvs

drill bits or similar. 5/64" or 3/32" are what I use for winding my 2-2.5 ohm micro coils
Wire cutters or nail trimmers, Tweasers.

So you can't get 30 watts of power from a .5 to 2.4 ohms of resistance?

The Kayfun doesn't have the airflow or wicking to support 30 watts.

With a ~.5 ohm coil a DNA will switch to unregulated until you knock the top off the battery charge. At 3.8v the DNA would begin to regulate. The DNA can only regulate the voltage up, it can't regulate the wattage lower than what ambient battery voltage allows.

The coil resistance I have in my KF at my desired wattage requires 3,5v (that's where a DNA shuts off saying it's time for a recharge) So having my KF on a DNA is no different than having it on a mechanical. (unregulated) and I would have to up the coil resistance to get the vape I want.

While this addresses resistances of .5 to .6 it doesn't address .7 to 2.4

You seem to have missed the Kayfun part. Without modifying the KF, 11-12 watts is all it will support with a normal build. Now, re-run your calculations. A 1.5 ohm coil will MAX out the DNA. Much better off getting above 2 ohms at that low a wattage.

    Thus my original comment:

What works well with a KF is the Evolv Kick-2, which has both step up & step down, and a 15 watt limit, or any number VV APVs.

There are any number of RBA/RDAs that are a better choice on a DNA.

Congrats on quitting the nasty cigs! You can always start rebuilding the coils in your Kanger tanks if you are wanting a starting point to learn how. I rebuild all of my Kanger heads with rayon and they perform better than the stock heads that they come with. As others have stated you will need a few supplies for building but it is well worth it in the long run and I actually enjoy it. Good luck and Happy and safe vaping!

I asked you a simple question and you partially answered it. I followed up asking for the rest of the answer. I'll ask again. Using the DNA 30 can you get 30 watts of power from resistances of .7 to 2.4.

Not sure why you keep changing your posts.

I have to put in my vote for the SeVen-22 22650 mod. This bad boy uses the SX220 chipset. As the name suggests between 7-22 watts .05 ohm minimum. Short and reverse bat protection. Easy intuitive menu. Stick a moderate 2.2 ohm Kayfun on it and at 3500mah it will last for two days.
