Time, trouble, and, money saving for those new to e-cigarettes.

Hi,

My name is Doug and I am new here but have been vaping E-cigarettes for about a year now. My wife and I had to quit smoking for her doctor to perform surgery last year. Yes, the doctor would not perform a total knee replacement surgery on my wife unless she quit smoking at least 30 days before surgery. He actually tested her prior to surgery. I quit as well for her benefit. Both of us had smoked for well over 20 years. It would have been IMPOSSIBLE without E-cigarettes. Even though my wife was still getting nicotine it was the carbon monoxide the doctor was concerned about.
My wife was a menthol smoker and she preferred something that looked and tasted like a real cigarette. I was a non-menthol smoker and was not satisfied with disposable e-cigs or anything that resembled a real cigarette. My first advice for those that are similar to my wife is do not use disposables. They will cost you too much money and frustrate you over time. Also, your choices are limited as far as flavors and nicotine strength. Yes, there are some choices available in both in disposables but not nearly as much as there are in rechargeable ones. First, with rechargeables you can have one battery charged and ready at all times. That alone is a good reason for not using disposables. Plus the cost is triple if you stay with disposables. Your flavor choices are virtually unlimited with refillable ones. If you don't like the pre-filled cartomizers (the filter end) flavor choices, you can buy literally hundreds of flavors to re-fill your own. If that is not good enough for you, mix your own flavor to your hearts content. That is too much trouble for my wife and she is happy with buying her favorite menthol e-liquid and refilling her ecigs. This costs her in total about a third of what her smoking regular cigarettes did and her lungs are very glad she switched. The big named brands such as Blu are expensive and limited. This will probably change but for now I would suggest that you find a brand that uses universal fittings such as 515 threading. That way you can use any brand you want for your hardware.
My experience was very different. I could not be satisfied with the experience of e-cigs that resembled traditional cigarettes. I needed something more substantial. The term for that in the vaping world is "throat hit". I needed a tank system. I also am now making my own e-liquid for about a fourth of what I was paying for it. It is more trouble, but I am happier being able to mix my own flavor and controlling (to some extent) the quality of the engredients I am consuming. For people who so desire, getting into the hardware end and modding is another level deeper into the wonderful world of vaping. Good luck to everyone and I hope I have ...... no one off. God bless. - Doug...

Hi Dugwood2, and welcome to ECF.

Great to hear that you and your wife have both made the switch, and you're certainly right about disposables - although the cig-a-likes have certainly helped many get introduced and for some, the "feel" in the hand may also be useful to get "over the hump."

Uh, maybe add a little "white space" to your posts? Makes it easier to read :)

P.S. If I have committed any no-no's in this thread / post please inform me and be patient with me. I have never been in a forum of any type before and am new to this. I would have been happy to never have posted on here but, I couldn't ask questions without having put up 5 posts prior. There is a lot of great information in this forum and I have a few questions. Thanks and God bless, - Doug...

Congrats on your year of being non-smokers! That's quite an accomplishment. It's becoming more commonplace for doctors to insist that patients quit smoking prior to operations. My doctor insisted I lose weight before my back surgery. I guess that's going to be the next big thing LOL

I used cig-alikes exclusively for over a year and didn't want to try anything else even though I knew options were available. I wanted the 'cigarette experience'. Look, feel, etc. Eventually I bought an MVP (I think that was the first) so I would have something long-lasting away from home. I got to like it and 3 years later I rarely touch a cig-alike. I keep them around for days when I want to feel like I'm smoking. Everything has a place for someone.

I hope your wife's knee surgery turned out well. My mother had both replaced and it made a huge difference.

Nah, no boo-boos, happy you're here! IMO, we're all in this THR "project" together, and helping each other out is what we do.

But for many, reading on screens of different sizes and qualities, the extra spacing makes it a lot easier. And I, for one, like easy

I have just bought a Kanger Emow tank system. But yes, I am finding a lot of things I didn't know existed like dripping and rebuildables. I think I may end up dripping. I like the idea but does that not cost more? I know very little about it and have never seen anyone doing it. Does it go through a lot of juice? Also, do you have to keep refilling every few minutes? As you can tell, I am very ignorant about dripping.

Thank you all for your patience. Woofpuppy, I am glad your mother's surgeries have gone well. My wife has one down and one to go. Her first is still hurting and not healed completely. It's been over 9 months but she had complications. Did your mother get both done at same time? Is that even possible?

I know this is off topic. Sorry. Last question, how long between her two surgeries?

Hello and welcome to ECF Dugwood2. Congrats to you and your wife on making the switch. No matter how you decide to vape it's better than smoking. From what I've read dripping doesn't really use all that much liquid, some say they use less. I like to drip when I want to test taste some of my own DIY juice but can't see me doing it all day long. I prefer the RBA's, Rebuildable Atomizers, like the Kayfun 3.1 because they have a tank system that can hold alot of juice.

Thank you for sharing your story with us and I hope you'll share more of your and/or your wife's experiences with vaping. Please feel free to ask any questions you have because someone here will know something, lol. Keep us posted on how you're doing and I hope your wife's recuperation advances with no further complications.

Awesome switching story! I used the cigarette style e-cig for a year before wanting something more substantial. I've gone from disposable tanks to big plastic tanks, up to a huge Kanger tank (loved it but the atty burned out too fast for me), then down to slimline tanks with rebuildable atomisers and I think the next step will be dual coil rebuildables once I've burned out the 9 atomisers I just bought! It's an adventure and something that is unique to every vaper. I see people who swear by VV Nova tanks which were too leaky for my liking, and those who mock my Totally Wicked V3 which I've never seen leak and is reliable for me. It's all about finding what works for you, and vaping a bucketload of juice on the way!
