Warning. The cap is THICK and HARD. I went through lots of drill bits with cutting fluid and, when I ran out of drill bits, I ground out the inside of the cap to finish my hole! This would be a good situation to: a) drill most of it with a fatter bit and finish with your desired size. b) tool up to grind the inside of a 3/4" ID cylinder. c) decide it would look nice to grind a flat face onto the top cap cylinder and drill your hole in the center of it (thinnest part)
Thanks. I just finished modding it last night and thought the original thread wasn't getting the attention it deserved. Its a great idea, and really quite do-able. Thought if I splashed it over here to the RBA forum. Some folks might want to try it. I think the idea originated from a certain ENDYEL DM.
I know, I know. I've drilled about 7 different caps now. This one is at least double thickness (triple to some). Drill press, low speed, lotsa Rapid Tap. And still, it was a bear. Great general advice tho.
The nylon spacer is from one of those little cardboard box drawers @ Ace. It looks kinda like a faucet handle insert? (I didn't note the name of the thing) If I were to use a neg post, I would drill an oversized recess in the top of the nylon spacer to accomodate the screw head. The loose leg idea is working flawlessly. I've taken the mod out and about twice and it always fires with the same intensity. I don't think its budged. (where would it go . . . . . . .to the library?)
