ive been vaping for around 2 months and im venturing into coil and wick builds nothing big just beginning I have a kayfun lite plus on an mvp 2.0...its going well thought id try some cotton wicks for better flavour.:2cool:

Can anyone tell me if it is worth while boiling organic cotton before using it for wicks?

Also is there a big difference between de ionised water and distilled water for boiling as I can only really get hold of deionised which I believe is for filling batteries and not for human consumption....
any input would help thanks

Hi and welcome!

Hardly anyone boils anymore, since it was pointed out that the impurities wouldn't evaporate just boil around with the cotton.

Cotton sometimes has a cottony taste the first few drags. It dissipates, but I wanted you to be aware. Higher grade cottons, like Koh Gen Doh, don't seem to have a taste, but they can be hard to find and pricy.

Best advice I have is try it without boiling. If it's a good vape for you then bonus ... less hassle. I never boil and I don't get any unpleasant flavour. Everybody has different sensitivities to tastes and smells. Sometimes the first few minutes vapeing there is an earthy cottony taste but it goes away.

I used to buy raw organic untreated cotton because I thought it was better. Few months ago I ran out and grabbed the regular old cotton balls out of the bathroom cabinet and used it. To my surprise it was just fine for my taste. Perfect for me cause it's cheap and available everywhere.

I would say that it depends on the cotton. I have some completely sterile gauze for medical use that I have to boil. Every time I've tried it without boiling it makes my throat itch. My girlfriend doesn't notice, but she is a barbarian. I boil and change the water about 5 times. After that it is great. Even though I have about 5 pounds of it I will be getting some Koh Gen Do soon.

When I used cotton, I would taste the cotton, so would always pre-boil a handful, at a low simmer for 20 minutes, after water comes to a boil.

Depending on the fiber one is using, boiling can eliminate any possible cross contamination, and help speed up the break in seasoning time. Fibers intended for weaving and sewing do not always get pristine handling and susceptible to getting dirty.

With cotton, I'd try first without boiling. If you can taste the cotton, and it persists longer than you care to vape, then pre-boil a handful at a low roll. Dry it out, give it a shot.
