This post is not just for V4L but any webmaster or site owner who is interested. These are important tips to help your Search Engine placement.
First and foremost the most important search engine you can place in is Google. Google is king. Place well there and you will place well everywhere else. Now keep in mind that Google changes its system to value or place sites whenever they want and they do not tell people what they are looking for. This helps keep people from cheating. Another important thing to keep in mind about Google is never try to cheat them on placement. If they catch you your site may never be found in a Google search again. There are a number of things that Google rates your web site value on and these items can change at any time.
One thing Google looks at today is backward links or links to your site found on other sites. The better the site your link is on the better for your site. The more links out there pointing to your site the better for your sites placement in Google. If you want to see how many links Google counts pointing at your site simply type (without the quotes) " link:http://www.yourdomain.com" into the Google search and hit enter.
I've heard that backward links should be sought after manually rather than using software. I have always done mine this way, manually.
Another thing that Google looks at is pertinent text on your web pages. Yes that is right Google bots are reading your web pages. They are reading the words and judging if it fits the business that you run on the web. They are reading it and remembering the words on it to use for people to search for. For instance It is reading and remembering that V4L may say kr808, kr808-d, vapor king, e-cigarettes on it's web page and if someone types in any of these terms into Google then V4L may place in the search. Keywords in the copy of your pages is very important. Not placing important text in images and placing this copy actually on the page in html is crucial. Search engine spiders or bots can not read copy in an image. Only copy in the coding of the page.
They also are looking at the coding your web page uses when it is built for things like alt tags, H1 tags and more for errors and may penalize your site for not usng this coding correctly. An alt tag is coding that explains what an image is. For instance since the header on the V4L site can not be read by the spiders the alt tag will tell it what that image is. No alt tag info and no spider read, no placement on that title. H1 tags tell the spider that this copy is a headline and should be indexed into the search engine results as such.
Google uses a ranking system called "pagerank". It ranks every site on the web on a one to ten system. one being the least important and 10 being the most important. Almost no sites carry a ranking of 10. MSNBC carries an 8. irs.gov carries an 8. Google carries a 10...lol...of course. Ebay carries an 8. Walmart.com is a 7. Napa auto parts has a pr of 6. Most sites that are good basic small business sites carry a 3 or 4. Good webmasters work hard to get their rank up and to go from a 3 to a 4 is a lot of work.
If you want to see the page rank of web sites install the Google toolbar. During the install it will ask you if it can get information from your searches. Answer yes. Once it is done you will have the option of activating page rank.
Now keep in mind this ranking system can change at any time. Google can drop it if they want tomorrow and not tell one person out there. There are rumors that Google is phasing out page rank but who knows? So far it still has value. Google can also place less or more value on any of these things I mentioned above and not let anyone know.
There are also rumors that Google is moving towards a smart search engine that is tailored to the particular surfer that uses it. This new smart search engine may bring up different searches for the same term for different surfers depending on their particular surfing tastes. For instance Bill likes coffee and he runs a search for "java". Bill gets a list of coffee shops. Jim likes to program and he uses the same search term and searches for java. Jim gets a listing of programming sites rather than coffee shops.
This new smart engine is scaring the hell out of companies that charge businesses to optimize their web site and tailor it to place well in Google.
Keep in mind that none of these tips are set in stone. They are however good tips that if followed will help your site place well in Google.
Good Luck, Last Outlaw
