Hi, I was finally able to stop tobacco thanks to all the help I got here. What I am trying to figure is this : I have come to believe that big tobacco is adding some addictive substance in addition to nicotine. I am trying so far without success to get my spouse to switch to vapour cigs. When I first started to cut out tobacco there was a terrific compulsion to smoke in the morning, after meals and before bed. What I did for a whole week was chain vape strong nicotine. It worked. Does anyone have any info on tobacco additives ? Thanks, Steve

Thanks everyone for replies. I was studying today and came across old TV cigarette commercials. Enlightening. I grew up after WW 2. It seems like in the late 50s there were many promotions of menthol cigarettes. They showed very glamorous guys and gals smoking menthols at the beach. It got me hooked on KOOL and Salem for at least 50 years. So in addition to nicotine , I think there is the emotional response , and probably menthol has a factor. Thankfully we have some great menthol eliquid. Steve

The primary components of interest are Whole Tobacco Alkaloids (WTAs), which are know as having MAOI-like properties (e.g. antidepressant). These are present in all natural tobacco, but are not usually present in extracted purified nicotine. The only people to my knowledge selling WTAs for ejuice now is Aroma Ejuice Manufacturer of WTA Whole Tobacco Alkaloid Eliquid . This has helped many to quit smoking or quit faster, but is expensive. I tapered off over a long time myself, as I believe this part was almost as significant to me as the nicotine itself (for which I have a low tolerance or need), but apparently some are unaffected.

What I've picked up here about actual additives, such as ammonia, is they can increase the body's tolerance to the high dose of nicotine delivered. They don't make it stronger or have an effect of their own, rather they moderate the effects.

The problem with tobacco is once it's on fire there's thousands of chemicals and compounds in there interacting in ways we probably don't know much about. There's some evidence that nicotine isn't as addictive as previously thought if it's by itself. So some interactions in there is probably responsible for tobacco being so incredibly addictive.

About one year before I quit smoking, I changed from buying my cigarettes, to purchasing whole leaf organic tobacco. Yes, I had to shred it, get the humidity right, and roll it in a little roller. There was a huge difference. I would have to snag a real smoke (usually by trading one of mine for someone else's) on occasion. There were times when I couldn't get enough rolled when I was busy doing stuff. I managed to stick to my smokes for about 3 months straight, then I bought a pack of Camels.

I took a drag. What the hell? It was like smoking a cigarette for the first time in my life. I got real dizzy, light headed, etc. I went back to my organic roll your owns until right about a year, then I got myself a vape.

So there is definitely something else in there, and if you are wondering, it's in those American Spirits also. In fact, those other inidan brands, Signal, all of them. Although those brands have less than Camels. (Opinion/Observation) Testing is difficult, you'd have to smoke organic for a month, then try a cig of another brand.

BTW: Whole leaf organic hand rolled smokes with a 20mm filter costs about 80 cents a pack. There are no sin taxes on whole leaf, it's an agricultural product. Was it any healthier? I don't really think so, aside from not having that unknown stuff in them.

Smoking is an extremely complicated addiction. Not only the physical dependency on the nicotine, alkaloids, etc ... but it also has extremely strong behavioral components, too.

I smoked for over 30 years. Over the last 10 of those years, I tried to quit by using nicotine gum/patches, prescription drugs, and even hypnosis. None of them helped a bit.

Only by using an electronic cigarette was I able to stop using tobacco cigarettes. What the other "approved" stop smoking aids failed to do was replicate the behavioral components of smoking -- the hand-to-mouth behavior and inhaling/exhaling of smoking behavior. Ecigs replicated the physical/chemical dependancies and also replicated the behavioral components.

There were times I had 2 ecigs vaped at the same time. Just to get through. It takes some different methods sometimes. The only time I feel like a cigarette now is while watching Joe Kenda on an ID Homicide program. It's a hoot watching them all smoke.

I've read tobacco has quite a few addictive ingredients in it and the hand to mouth was and still is the hardest to deal with for me. Then there are a lot of things one doesn't even realize that they've done smoking. Like my job had to allow me the opportunities to grab a quick smoke. I would be early waiting for a ride so I could literally smoke all the way up to the car door. My choice of friends. My hobbies. My panic forgetting my cigarettes. My daily routines built around smoke breaks. It is all preventing one from giving up smoking. I saw it when I started vaping.
