My second kayfun arrived today. I wanted a 2nd to experiment with to try and get better results. Once i have it working (no leaking, no burnt hits) i tend to leave it that way until next time.

This time it came with a coil and silica wick in it. So i put it on the reader, and it's 0.6, with triple 1mm silica wick. Now i read enough people say to not bother with the shipping wicks for bad flavor. So i have never tried them.

So far, any coil I've made under 1.9 ohms, i get burnt hits on 2mm and 3mm silica. 1.9 and up, and all seems to work well. I tend to use the Navy Nest with 3mm silica, as long as it's above 1.9 ohms, it is ok. Great vapor production, no leaks, no burnt hits. However it seems to give about half to quarter of the flavor I am used to.

Onto the questions. I am just guessing it is possible to have 0.6 ohm with tripled 1mm silica as it is shipped this way. I see micro coils with such a small amount of cotton. But most (near all) videos i see, they are doubling, and making figure 8's out of 2mm silica.
I have been using a single strand of 3mm silica wrap. So i am puzzled as to what way is better, more wick or less for best results in flavor. I wasted a fair amount of materials with first one not cleaning it properly for first use. This 2nd one will be cleaned well.

Now that i have 2 of them to test, i may try cotton. But i do like that i get a week or more with silica. Working on this not so fun with these old eyes.

No responses yet huh? I got nothing better to do, so...

Probably because not a whole lot of silica/KF users around anymore. Most use a 1.5-2mm ID, horizontal coil with a "just snug" pull-through of cotton, about 25mm long... give or take. Some use vertical coils with cotton, hemp or ramie surround "blankets".

When I did use silica in a KF/R91%... It'd be a 27 or 28 gauge horizontal, from 0.8Ω~1.3Ω, wound on a 2mm mandrel, between 8-11 wraps, compressed. Then I'd pull through a length of 3mm German silica (or Ekowool), cut at about 25-29mm.
Worked fine and tasted OK... but I prefer the flavor obtained with cotton, hemp or ramie fiber. XC-116 ceramic is fine too... not cheap though. ;-)

Not a clue on burnt hits... plenty of folks, me included, have gone down as low as 0.4Ω~0.5Ω with a KF/unregulated mech... and no burnt flavor. Perhaps your coils are too close to the build deck, and you're not getting adequate air flow around the coil. I tend to use a 1.5~2mm gap between deck and underside of coil. YMMV.

Oddly... I still kinda like to use silica on RDAs at 0.5Ω or less. Silica "taste", with the juice I like to use in a dripper isn't really noticeable to me.

This last bit - "I am just guessing it is possible to have 0.6 ohm with tripled 1mm silica as it is shipped this way."
Remove the coil and pull it out straight. Measuring from screw contact to screw contact. For it to be 0.6Ω... if it's 30 gauge, it will be approximately 21.1mm long. If 29 - 26.6mm and if 28 gauge - 33.5mm long. You get the idea.

With silica, because you can torch clean it if it gets gunked up, you should be able to go quite a bit longer than a week... just sayin'.

All I got... good luck

thank you for your info, and input. I see i am late to the game. Truth be told, i was hanging waiting for a reply before i started on 2nd kayfun. I read ur reply, and got at it.

Did both tonight, one silica, one cotton. Both fog machines, any bands going on tour, u call me.

Flavor, i find them the same, not that it's bad, just expected more. I did not know you can torch silica clean. I wreck many builds from poor eyesight. Nice to know i can prolong the ones i do get right.

Enough videos and questions, i just need to test, and remember what works and what does not.
