Toothache after vaping only certain fluids? What causes this? anyone else get it?

Hi, I've searched and read a lot of threads on here and elsewhere with people complaining of increased tooth sensitivity when vaping, but most of the time I see it blamed on quitting smoking, rather than the vaping itself, and while I can't speak for everyone that is very definitely not the case with me.

I have a weird issue with specific vape flavors that seems to set off a wicked fierce toothache in my 'dead' tooth (had a root canal years ago, and it shouldn't be able to feel anything, and normally doesn't.) I was never a heavy smoker, and had no tar buildup on my teeth to cause issues after quitting. Furthermore it only happens with specific fluids, and I know it's not the PG or the nic, because I used to DIY mix fluids, and tried out many different flavorings with the same 100% PG and nic strength, but only ever had an issue with one of the flavors (Totally Wicked's Gold Standard 'Mexican Kiss'). What would happen is that after taking a few hits, my tooth would start to ache... and if I took several hits or otherwise didn't stop immediately, within a half hour or so I would be in incredible pain and the pain would begin spreading through my jaw. After which, the pain would continue, slowly fading away over a period of maybe 24-32 hours after I stopped vaping. It was -extremely- unpleasant, but I could avoid it by avoiding that flavor.

I recently decide to upgrade my vape kit since my old atomizer had burned out, and I had been without for a while. I bought a new Kanger Protank and some EC Blend 'Popsicle USA' pre-mixed fluid (since I couldn't find DIY VG blends and wanted to get away from 100% PG). While I was filling my tank, I had a slight mishap and spilled some fluid into the mouthpiece, which wound up wetting the corner of my lip. Within half an hour I was in AGONIZING pain from that tooth. I ended up taking 3 naproxen, a vicodin, and as much benzocaine as I could pump into my gums, and could still barely sleep that night from the pain. At first I was very confused why the sudden toothache flare up was happening, but then I remembered the vape fluid and issues I'd had before with that specific flavor.

Does anyone know if there's a specific sweetener or flavorant that goes into some of these blends that can cause this kind of reaction? I would really like to know what other people's experiences have been, so I can know what brands or even better specific flavors of fluids to avoid.

Contact your dentist.
At the moment I don't have one, but if I did I somewhat doubt they'd be particularly helpful.
FBH: it hurts when I vape
DDS: stop vaping

Never had this happen you may be feeling the begining of a cavity or just sensitive teeth. I agree about contacting your dentist

As I mentioned above it's a dead tooth. Even if it had a cavity, there's no nerve there to get irritated.. and nothing else causes these toothaches, only some vape fluids, and those have been able to set me off since I first started over a year ago.

I've noticed the same, but not pain, per se, just a little sensitivity.

Since I DIY, I know exactly what's in my liquid as well.

Here's the exact recipe:

Nicotine, 5 mg/ml
Menthol, made from pure menthol crystals and PG (5%)
TFA's Cinnamon Redhots (1%)
TFA's Milk Chocolate (0.5%)
Balance: VG and PG, to roughly 50/50 on the mix.

Given the amounts of cinnamon and chocolate, I tend to doubt it's those but it still could be.

Maybe if we find a commonality for those who have tooth discomfort we can figure it out!

Hi welcome to the forum!

I had similar issues when I first started vaping, it went away completely after 3 months. To me it seemed certain juices that were sweeter would make some Of my teeth hurt for sure, like a bad tooth ache. These were teeth I had had problems with before. But like I said it stopped occurring after 3 months.

How long have you been vaping future?

I think smoking may have desensitized these. Eventually your teeth adjust

Hi...just joined. Last week my gums were painful. Looked it up and apparently the nicotine from smoking all these years has created a crust. After app 3 weeks it goes away and the gums feel like teething. Could that be the problem. Used a mouth rinse of warm water & salt boom gone.

yeah I kinda get that there are other dental issues known to smokers, former smokers, and heavy vapers from the nicotine and tar issues, but I can guarantee in this particular case it's unrelated. I'm only an occasional, social vaper, and was the same with smoking before this. Nicotine has never caused any problems for me, acute or chronic, and it's seemingly just an inexplicable pain brought on by some chemical in specific flavors of e juice. Like I could smoke some really strongly mixed juice of another flavor to the point that I'm borderline nauseous all day long from the constant nic overdose, but never have the slightest sensitivity in my teeth... but the instant I take a hit of this one flavor, I immediately regret it.

Hi! thanks for the detailed response.

Incidentally, there was definitely a strong cinnamon note in the Mexican Kiss flavoring I was having trouble with originally. I don't have a very exacting recipe, but it was essentially:
Nicotine: 18-20mg/ml
TW's Mexican Kiss flavoring (about 1/4 by volume)
Diluent: 100% PG

I've actually been wanting to start DIY mixing 50/50 PG/VG but havent found many good flavors for it, where do you buy yours?

I've been vaping maybe 3 years, but like I said only occasionally. I usually break out my vape for a night or two out with friends once a month or so, and end up vaping maybe 4ml of fluid in a month--not a lot.

The pain I'm describing though isn't something I can just get used to or lose sensitivity to, because it's so severe I'd never want to intentionally subject myself to it in the first place. I plan on giving this fluid away without ever vaping it, after the incident I had filling the tank.

I have had this off and on for five years and in my experience it happens when I chain vape high nic juices. It affects my gums which make it feel like the teeth.
Never thought about it being caused by a flavor or juice base.
I only vape vg and only have this when I increase nic and/or amount.
Any bleeding of the gums?

Then it's possibly the cinnamon. Surprisingly, I gobble cinnamon stuff all the time (it's my one weakness) and have no issues. That doesn't mean it's real cinnamon in our vape, however, and more likely to be extracted or synthesized flavorings.

Ask ten people this question, get ten different answers. :) Hang out on the DIY section a while.

I personally prefer The Flavorer's Apprentice (a division of The Perfumer's Apprentice and sometimes called TFA, sometimes TPA). Others have other preferences.

Now that I've stabilized my daily mix, I order straight from TFA as the price on large quantities is excellent (I get my flavorings 4 ounces at a time). You can order smaller quantities from them as well, I just don't.

10 ml per day here. :)

Dumb question, can you eat things like cinnamon rolls and whatnot?

I've heard people can be really allergic/sensitive to cinnamon flavor. It has other side effects I've heard of too.

Other side effects? such as what?

I'm pretty positive the flavors are almost all synthetic... various benzine compounds etc. And yes, I can eat cinnamon things fine.

Thanks for the tips on the blending, I'll check it out. I mostly just need a source to buy supplies from and flavors to experiment with.

With the small amount of vaping I do, I'm sure this bottle of platinum ice nic I bought is going to last me a lifetime, or at least until it goes bad....

im copy/pasting from another related post i made a few minutes ago

if you are referring to general oral discomfort from vaping, let me be the first to say it sucks and im sorry you are experiencing it. i hope it gets better for you asap

ive done some research the last few days about why my mouth feels like a bomb went off in it. the overwhelming majority of input ive read regarding this problem has one major caveat which i cannot identify with. the general consensus on oral misery associated with vaping indicates that its a side effect of quitting cigarettes.

BUT WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!!!! i havent stopped smoking cigarettes!!! some days i still smoke as much as half a pack and other days ill smoke maybe 4 or 5. i certainly havent reduced my smoking enough to say i dont smoke anymore. in light of this, i've gotten somewhat frustrated leafing through page after page after page of people saying oral discomfort is from quitting cigarettes.

the blisters on my tongue and the inside corners of my mouth have started to go away but i still have a pretty !@#%ing mean swelling in the roof of my mouth right behind my front teeth. the entire left half of my mouth hurts from top to bottom. its been the cause of a great deal of pain for me the last 10 days. i kept thinking it will get better tomorrow and it hasnt and now im worried!! im going to be camped out in front of the dentist's office tomorrow morning.
