Hello everyone!

I have decided to adventure into the world of building my own coils. I know this is probably something you have all been doing for a long time, but it's the next step for me!

Anyways, what I'm wondering is, do I need an apv? Do I have to be able to read the wattage of the coil before I use it?

If so, which devices would you recommend? I'm usually using protank minis.

Thanks!

Yes an APV is a mod and most, but not all, have electronics and can give you useful information. But my advice if you start coil-building is to buy either a little device to measure your coils before using them, or better still a multimeter to do so.

A multimeter can be had for $10. You do not want to run an untested coil because it will perhaps have a problem with it - like a short circuit - which will over tax your battery with bad consequences. This is the reason a lot of us advocate always testing coils, whether we have made 2 or 2000 in the past.

Thanks for the info!

How would I use the multimeter - just touch both ends of the coil, before inserting it into the head?

First of all, you would need to touch the leads of the meter together and read the resistance of the leads themselves, then subtract that number from what your coil reads. I have a cheapy Harbor Freight meter and the readings jump all over the place. Easier to use a mod with built in meter or one of those little meter boxes with ego and 501 connections built onto it.

I started making coils by making new ones for Vivi Novas, but either way you will need a few basics.

Kanthal wire - i recommend 30g to start because it's not too difficult to work with. Temco sell it in the US cheaply and you can always find it on ebay.

Wick: you have a few choices here - the easiest and cheapest is cotton, wither a yarn or wicks made from cotton wool balls. In a pinch, i have even made a wick from a q-tip/cotton ear-bud! Silica wick - you can buy it anyplace that sells ecig gear, but the cheapest is likely fasttech.

Some nail clippers and a set of small screwdrivers. Oh and if you have bad eyesight - maybe a magnifying headset - Amazon sells them pretty cheap.

A few youtube videos and your test equipment and off you go!

You cannot buy patience, and a lot of my early builds would end flying across the room in frustration, but with a bit of time and practice you'll wonder what all the fuss was about and you'll save a few pennies too and assume a new geekiness in the eyes of your friends!

Congratulations! First step to taking charge of your life again, after quitting that is.

Yes you will definitely need an ohmmeter, preferably one that reads hundredths/Ω. For a great price at the moment on a standard resistance tester (hurry this price is rare)…

Ohm Checker | Planet Vape

But save yourself weeks or months perhaps and take a look at Metalhed's great thread…

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/tips-tricks/463771-protank-cotton-rebuild-way-i-do.html

Get the basics on assembly technique. Worry about hardware later. Get the clearomizer/s you have now working flawlessly. The approaches Metalhed describes will help you regardless of whatever atomizer/clearomizer you may decide upon.

Good luck!

Sorry ashao, I didn't realize you were in Denmark now that my eyes are open. I suggested a US source for that resistance checker. Do look at the link I posted above. It will save you a great deal of aggravation. The Protank Mini is a perfect atomizer to begin rebuilding. And the exact information for how to do it precisely for Kanger products is laid out in that thread.

sounds like you got your answer

here is another place selling the ohm meter...

- Atomizer Ohm Checker with USB

:)

Wish I could find these in the states. The "Oracle" versions I've received do not work beyond 1/10thΩ. Looking for a rechargeable usb version that does.

Good luck all!

:)
