So for a long while I was under the impression that AW's 18490s had an 8 amp or so limit. Then, on multiple occasions here I've seen people claim a limit of well over 10a. I forget exactly what reading I was doing at the time, but it was convincing enough that I then assumed a limit of over 10, maybe a bad choice.

Here I am today watching Phil Busardo's two-part video with Zen, when Phil brings up the issue of the DNA30 drawing 12 amps max, and coming with a battery tube for 18490 batteries. They both agreed there wasn't a currently made 18490 rated for 12 amps, which worried me a bit as I had been going on the assumption of a rating of over 10 for the AWs.

So what's the deal? I was thinking perhaps AW has two varieties available in 18490 size just like they do with their 18650s, but I couldn't imagine Phil and Zen would be oblivious to a standard AW battery. And I couldn't ever find any 18490s other than their standard ones.

According to RTD and AW himself the AW 18490 has a max discharge rate of 15C, which is 16.5A

I have 2 of these AWs and have been using them at 10.5A daily without issue.

IMR18490 Specifications :

Nominal Voltage : 3.7V
Capacity : 1100mAH
Lowest Discharge Voltage : 2.50V
Standard Charge : CC/CV ( max. charging rate 3A )
Cycle Life : > 500 cycles
Max. continuous discharge rate : 15C
Operating Discharge Temperature : -10 - 60 Degree Celsius

This is the correct info afaik. There are specs for this battery out there that list it at 8C which would make for an 8.8A max discharge rate, but I tend to trust the Spec from AW himself.

So AW is a guy and the brand? Sorry, off topic, but I love these batteries, and have been wondering about this.

Yes, I think his name is Andy Wan??? (<--- My gut tells me I got it wrong, but it's close) He just used his initials for the brand name.

I've been running a .4 ohm build on my AW 18490s without the battery getting warm at all, and they seem to hit harder than my slightly older AW 18650s (2000 not 16000) so I totally believe they can handle the current. I just got a little worried after seeing Phil's vid, I can see Phil making a slip up but it surprises me greatly that Zen wouldn't be aware of this.

Thanks for the replies guys, I find 18490 devices to be the perfect size, now I feel comfortable using them at my preferred power levels again ;)

Does anyone know how the 18490's manage this. With 18350's having a 6amp rating, and 18650's having a 10 amp rating, it would stand to reason the 18490's would be somewhere in between, but they're listed with a 15C rating, so 1100 mah x 15C / 1000 = 16.5 amps, it seems almost too good to be true...

That does confuse me a bit too, it would mean the 490s are on par with the beastly 1600mAh 18650s from AW. I suspect it's simply trading capacity for current handling, in the same way the 1600s are better than the 2000s. In other words, AW could sell an 18490 that is 1500mAh or so but only handles 8amps, or the current lower capacity, but higher amperage one they sell now.

I always wondered why you take such a massive hit in capacity when going from the 2000mAh 18650s to the 18490s, but when going down to 18350s the difference isn't so great relatively. But if you compare the capacity of the 1600mAh 18650s to their 18490s it makes more sense, if the 18490 is geared more towards higher amp draw than capacity.

This is just me spitballing so don't take it as gospel, but it would make sense.

Yea it does sound to good to be true almost. Makes me want to make sure I don't get screwed by a counterfeit AW ya know, because unfortunately I hear more and more about people ending up with counterfeits these days. Does anybody know of a reputable vendor in the U.S, that sells these for under 10$??

I ordered some of mine from Kidneypuncher, they are like $11 there, but I can personally confirm them working great in high amp draw situations. RTD (AW IMR 18490 3.7v 1100mAh) has them for under $10, they are a well respected vendor so I wouldn't worry about getting a fake from them either.
