Trying to find my first e-cig/vaporizer

Hi everybody,

First a little about myself. I am currently in my mid-to-late twenties and have been a smoker for almost 16 years. I started smoking when I was 12 years old. I wish I could go back in time and stop myself from buying that first pack with my friends, but that's not an option anymore. The reason I was able to start smoking at such a young age and buy cigarettes is because I grew up in The Netherlands, and at the time there was no real smoking age being enforced. Officially you were not allowed/supposed to be able to buy cigarettes if you were younger then 16, but it usually was not a problem to buy a pack of smokes as a twelve year old.

I switched from smoking filter cigarettes to roll-your-owns pretty soon, because it was much cheaper. A pack of tobacco used to cost the same as a pack of filter cigarettes, but you could get about 50 cigarettes out of a pack of tobacco, versus having 20 in a pack of filter cigarettes.

I have never been a really heavy smoker, but have always preferred a very heavy throat hit. I tend to inhale very deeply. I have never come across a filter cigarette that feels satisfactory, and whenever I bum a filter-cigarette off of someone, I always break the filter off and smoke it by lighting up the end where the filter used to be. If you put the end where you just broke the filter off in your mouth, you'll end up with flakes of tobacco in your mouth, which is pretty disgusting. I learned that pretty quick...

During my teens I would smoke an average of about 12-15 cigarettes a day. This went up slightly when I went to live on my own (since I could smoke in my own house) and I'd smoke about 20 cigarettes a day. Whenever I would have a (beer) party with friends and roommates, this could easily go up to about 50 cigarettes, but that happened maybe once or twice a month. The thing I remember most about those nights where I would smoke a whole pack of tobacco, was that horrible taste in my mouth the next morning. As if a rat died on your tongue, and someone rubbed ash on your teeth...Yuck.

The worst part of living on my own was that I created a habit of smoking my last cigarette in bed; needless to say my bedroom and sheets must have smelled awful.
Not that I would know, because smoking has completely destroyed my sense of smell. I can barely smell anything nowadays.

Now that I am married, moved to the United States (officially immigrated) and living with my (American) wife - who HATES my smoking more then anything - I smoke seven cigarettes a day. Yes, seven. I know the exact number because I have put myself on a smoking diet. I smoke one in the morning on my way to work in the car (my wife also HATES driving my car or being a passenger in it, because of the smell), one at 11 am, two during my lunch-break (beginning and end), one on my way home, one after dinner and one before bed.
My wife is very unhappy with my smoking, because when we first met I actually had quit smoking so she didn't know I smoked. After 8 months of being a non-smoker I ended up at a birthday party, got drunk, lit one up and it went down hill from there. One week later I was smoking again. Buying that first pack of tobacco after so long felt like a humiliating defeat. I succumbed...again, to those nasty cancer sticks.

Even though I don't smoke that much, I just cannot seem to quit. I have tried 8 times, with varying success. The longest time was 8 months, which was also when I met my wife. I think personally for me it's not even the nicotine I am so addicted to, but the throat hit you get when smoking a cigarette.

In my quest to kick this nasty nasty habit, I ordered an e-cig about a year and a half ago. I ordered it on Ebay from some weird Chinese web-shop, and it was a horrible experience. I'd only get the throat hit with the first two puffs (after that it was like inhaling air), the cartridges leaked all over the place, the battery died and I ended up throwing the whole thing (plus 15 unused cartridges) in the trash.

Now, a year-and-a-half later I really want to give this another try. The reason I have decided to try this again is my wife's complaints, my own health, the horrible cigarette smell in my car and on my clothes, to get rid of that nasty smokers cough I have developed lately and gets the worst at night, and to (hopefully) restore some sense of smell. Not dying of lung cancer in my early 50's would also be a big plus, though I realize nobody actually knows if and how much safer e-cigarettes are. But they can't be any worse then real cigarettes, right?...:)

I want to do it properly this time though so I am seeking some advise. I have read a lot on this website, but I still have not been able to make a decision on what to buy.
I can justify spending about a 100 bucks to start off with.

From my research so far I have already decided on a few things:
- I like to be able to refill my own cardridges
- I don't care if it looks like a cigarette. An e-cigarette might look like a real one from a distance, they don't "feel" like a cigarette at all. It feels like holding a heavy, thick pen in your mouth. So I am not trying to emulate a cigarette, I just need the "kick" when I'm inhaling.
- I want whatever I end up getting to have the little push-button, instead of it being an automatic one.
- Battery life is really not a very big concern, because I don't smoke all that much anyway. If it lasts a day, I'm good.
- I am looking for something that approaches a traditional tobacco flavor and has a good amount of throat kick.

Now, that last thing is the most important to me. Whether it looks like a cigarette or not is really not that important.

Could someone point me in a good direction somewhere? Right before I registered on this forum I was about to hit the "order" button on an 'Eversmoke e-cig". but then decided against that, because I have a feeling that is going to turn into a disappointment again.

Also, if you have read this far; thank you, and I hope you will be able to give me some advise on this.;)

I would look into a ego style kit they are the best starting point for most and work with 99% of the basic stuff you may want to try later. they offer many different options from different vendors. A place to look at is Welcome to Roar Vapor they have some good start up kits that aren't over priced. Just remember to get a extra battery if the kit only has one and extra juice as you try to figure out how everything works. this will also help to make it till your next liquid order. Nothing can side track you faster then no juice or waiting for a battery to charge.

that should give you an idea of what to look for from the vendor you choose and an idea of what price you should be looking to pay.

I switched to vaping 3 weeks ago today (yay!!!) and ordered an ego kit off ebay like this one-

Double Vaporizer Ego T Starter Kit 1100mAh Batteries Zipper Case Pick Color | eBay

I really like having the extra battery so I always have a back up, but honestly I'm not a fan of those style tanks. The wick is tord the top, and I am always worried of burning them, so I bought some a few ismoka bcc tanks to replace them. Other then that this is a great basic kit, I even ordered 2 more for my brothers who want to quit. I'm sure you'll get lots of opinions here, this is just worked for me.

Thanks for sharing the story and good luck!

Vaping is very different from smoking and your preference will change once you start. For instance, while you might prefer the tobacco flavor initially, you should visit your local store and taste other flavors too. I started thinking "why would anyone vape anything other than tobacco flavor?" too. But once I tasted coffee and other delicious flavors, I didn't use tobacco flavor ever again. Your preference for gear will change to. This is mainly due to the fact that, since you can vape indoor (and in your car), you might end up vaping much more frequently than smoking. This leads to getting a larger setup. These are all very typical trend that lots of people go through.

eGo kit is a great way to start. Don't have too many specific preferences at this point and just enjoy vaping. Keep your mind open to new flavors and enjoy the fact that you have finally quit.

Here is link to a typical kit setup
Kanger eVod Kit - Stainless
Just need to add juice and replace atomizer head when needed.

Good luck!

Hardest thing to start is finding that right juice that satisfies your craving, throat hit. If you have a local vape shop that will let you sample, get yourself down there.

As for device, you can't go wrong with an eGo type. Even if you decide you want something different down the road it's a great place to start.

I'm fairly new too. I jumped in Dec 26, and at this point am almost 4 weeks analog free. (yay me!) I use a ego c-twist battery and found for a tank the kanger evod (or similar bottom coil tank) has a better cleaner taste. Plus they don't leak when tipped.

It's kind of a matter of trial and error and playing around. A good throat hit will also come from the mix of your ejuices. What percent of pg to vg (i found I like a 60/40) but then again its all personal preferences. Like other people have said you may want to try other flavors than a tobacco flavor, but at least get 2 variants of liquids. I got bored within a week of a single flavor, and was tempted to quit, but I switched it up and was better.

Maybe another rule of thumb is always buy in pairs. (ie, 2 batteries, 2 tanks, 2 liquids)

Oh and don't forget to buy replacement coils for the tanks. I'll stop rambling now :)

Good luck!

Guys, thank you so much for all the replies! That is really helpful!

I just went ahead and ordered the Kanger Evod kit that ZeroOhms suggested.

I don't really have the possibility to sample a lot of juices. I live in North Pole, Alaska. It can hardly be described as a "town" as it is. Finding an actual smoke-shop around here is not going to happen. There is a smoke shop in Fairbanks - which is pretty much right next door - but they don't really care a lot of e-smoke stuff...

I am kind of lost when it comes to the amount of e-juice you can get, so for now I just ordered some (I think "evo") juice online, that is supposed to have "tobacco" flavor. We'll see how that works out. I ordered 30ml, but I have no idea how long you can expect that to last...

I just bought another pack of tobacco today, and hopefully that will have proven to be my last...That would be pretty awesome!;)

The rough rule of thumb when starting out with a battery like the one you got is 1ml/day give or take. There are things that can alter that like leaks or excess vaping, but you can roughly expect that bottle of juice to last you 30 days. Just make sure when you order more juice you give yourself time for the new juice to get there before you run out of your current bottle.

I would reorder when you have about 1/3 of the bottle left, but giving your location you might want to order a bit earlier then that.

Congrats on the order, and welcome.

Good job with the Kanger EVOD kit. I personally own two EVOD starter kits, and it's the best thing I've found so far (although, I will warn you, I am extremely new to vaping myself). I started out with Blu and Mistic e-cigs, and I hated them, yet I always spent far too much money on them. Sometimes I would spend up to $16 a day just on e-cigs, which, with my barely-above minimum wage job (McDonald's, at the time), was unacceptable. My EVOD has saved me a lot of cash ever since.

Hopefully you can find a tobacco flavor you are satisfied with. I know taste is something that's individual to everyone, and tobacco is a difficult flavor to emulate in an e-juice. Some tobacco vapes will taste nutty, while others will have almost a black coffee flavor to them. But I'm confident you'll find something you like. Enjoy your new EVOD, and enjoy being analog free, my friend!

I am new to vaping myself. I bought the EVOD kit 11 days ago and have found it pretty easy to put down the analogs. I agree with the other commenters that you should open your mind on some flavors and try a few different things to make sure you find something you like. Others may know of better sites but for a total beginner I would check out mt baker vapors as they have really affordable prices which will allow you to try a few different flavors and experiment with the pg /vg ratio to find the throat hit you like. I have been told that higher PG results in more THroat hit. So far, I like a 50/50 mix but the 80/20 I have definitely has more throat hit. Good luck

Yay new vaper! I quit in July 2013, and like you, CRAVED the throat hit. In MY opinion, the higher nicotine (I use 24) and a pg/vg mix of 70 pg/30 vg worked. I have many juice flavors I'll never use because there was no shop near me, so I bought "taste unseen". If I could offer any useful advice it would be, get the sample sets. It will save you a lot of money and frustration. I read tons of flavor reviews and ordered what others loved, only to discover I couldn't stand that particular taste. You will likely do the same. Just know that once you hit on flavors you really like, it will all make sense. I smoked for 35 years, and tried all the quit methods. This works. We're all pulling for you!

Get an MVP 2.0. I did the same thing you're doing right now people told me to get an EVOD or Vision VV. I really wish I would have gotten an MVP 2.0 from the start. No reason to waste your money when a month from now you'll want a better model.

I just started vaping two weeks ago and I have not touched an analog since my very first inhale of vapor (no kidding).

I did a lot of research on the different hardware out there and settled on the Vapor Zeus by Vapor 4 Life. A little pricey (I paid ~$80 with a coupon for the starter kit) but... WOW!

I don't really care for Vapor 4 Life's juices too much though. I bought some from Halocigs and they are much better IMO.

lol how are those things? they're kind of strange looking.

Hi guys,

Thank you so much for all the replies. It is so helpful So as far as I understand, some of you mix your own juice? That sounds really interesting...I'd have to do some more research to get me started on that. For now I just bought a bottle of e-juice.

So anyway, my Kanger Evod arrived in the mail today. When I checked the tracking code and saw they had delivered it, I ran (well, drove actually...) out to my mailbox and grabbed the package. It's not good for a battery to be sitting outside at -5 degrees fahrenheit.

Took me a little while to figure out how to fill up the tank and put it all together, but when I finally did and started vaping...man, surprise all along: tastes pretty much like a cigarette, and this tobacco flavored juice actually has even a slightly stronger throat hit than the cigarettes I use(d) to roll.

This is starting to look pretty good.

Now, I do have two questions, because neither one is explained in the little user manual:
- This kit comes with 5 coils. Do these things burn out/stop working? I was not aware of that. No biggie though, but just wondering how long a coil normally lasts?
- Can you put a vaporizer like this in your coat pocket without it leaking? This did not come with a pouch or anything to carry it with, so I'm wondering what the best way would be to carry this around.

Also, I am so glad these things have a button! I am pretty excited about this...This might actually be the thing that'll get me off the analogs.

If I can't quit, at least I can make it a hell of lot less harmful, and this is starting to look pretty good!

Also, I can vape (I almost want to keep call it smoking) in my house now without the wife complaining...I call that a big win too!

So once again thanks for all the great advise, and I'll check back in in a couple of days to let you all know how things are going!;)

i would say to go with the ego also... go for the twist.. or the v.2 mega.. i have the v.2mega.. vapes all day and i can turn it up or down depending on the juice im using.. be sure to get a few extra starting things.. a few bottles of juice (cause untill you get the hang of filling your gonna spill some) an extra tank just in case.. (always good to have a spair) and if you get a replaceable core.. like the cartomizers.. be sure to have a few spairs of that as well ( you will need to change the core about 1 a week anyway) i got all that when i started. cost me about 60$ all together.. but now im only spending 20$ on juice a month instead of 100s on ciggaretes a month.. plus no lighters to worry about.. no ashes.. no smoke smell.. hope this helped a lil... VAPE ON ego v.2 mega.. the way to go..

Don't put undue pressure on yourself to quit. Whenever you have a craving or that trigger point like coffee. Vape first! If not satisfied , you can always have an analog Later. I did it that way. Killed a 35 yr 1 1/2 pad habit. Three years later, still have the crumpled pack with 4 ciggies in it. I consider it a war trophy..
