Hi All,

My older brother has been a smoker for as long as I can remember and has now gained intrest in trying vaping after seeing my setup. I'm using the VAMO v3 with a Protank 2 which I think will be a little much for him. He needs something simple, something that will last him all day long but not too bulky.

I was thinking the Kanger E.V.O.D Battery (1000mAh) with a Protank Mini and wanted feedback if you think this will be a good setup for him or not?

Also he has been smoking reds his whole life, any e-liquids you would recommend?

Thanks,

Jeff

Should be a good starter kit...as long as the model you were considering hasn't been already recalled. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/new-members-forum/444560-evod-battery-recall.html

Beginner juices are always a crapshoot, especially if the novice is expecting an e-liquid flavor to duplicate a cigarette. My first suggestion is to take him to any local vape shops that have a juice tasting bar. He can go from one selection to another to see which he prefers.

If not, the best thing is to NOT buy a large quantity of a particular flavor. What if he hates it? Common wisdom is to buy multiple samples in a variety of flavors. Many online juice vendors now offer sampler packs. Get a couple sampler packs, and if he finds he likes one or two, order more in a larger size bottle.

You're a vet now, so you know the drill as far as explaining vaping technique vs smoking technique; drinking plenty of water; importance of backups for his backups with batteries, juice delivery devices, and juice. I'd suggest a couple of different juice delivery devices. The Protank is an excellent choice, but also get a top fill clearo like a Mini Vivi Nova or Innokin iClear 16.

iClear is bottom fill and Viva Nova may be more of a pain for a new person who won't remember to keep the wick wet. Other advice is good. :)

I agree with Phil from Taste Your Juice reviews...that the EVOD is one of the easiest for new users. I'm a 3 week user myself and needed something simple as I've fought many battles with my 510 DCT -- now getting it down.

Probably best to start with the higher Ohm tank heads...the 1.8 are so easy to burn. The device works better with 50/50+ PG/VG to my understanding. I loved it on 60/40 but it's really problematic with my 100% VG, the heads clog but VG can be a hassle anyway.

I'm going to give the EVOD another shot with the higher voltage heads..and diluted VG juice as well the iClear for such ...it runs a higher voltage (recommended). The Protank 2 now uses the same heads as the EVOD so it would be easy to upgrade if desired.

P.S. I'd encourage getting an ego or vision twist battery rather than (or with) an evod starter kit -Better battery and then they can change clearos if desired to the higher voltage one...plus control their vape. Just have to tell them to start at lowest setting and work up in .1 increments. With the kit one you're stuck at what you get, one voltage and shorter battery life generally.

P.S. This is the best instructional video I've seen on EVOD (other than Phil's who goes into DIY wick/coil) two main things you can do to trash it that you want to avoid. Kanger eVod Clearomizer | fully rebuildable bottom coil (no financial interest with this company).

Hey There GoBigGuy,

Something like this might fit the bill:
Kanger eVod Kit - Stainless
The better half and I each have a set, and love the ease of use, plus we did not like to share a set.
Might be best to try a local B&M that does the "hands on", and let him sample the local flavors.
I also found a Desert Camal flavor that was close to the Joe Camel cigs I had known and loved (for 40 years).:?:

Have you let him try your setup? Does he seem interested in that kind of setup?

I agree with the B&M suggestion, if you live close enough to a decent one. It's so individual. For example, the Evod. I bought a couple because of glowing reviews. But, so far I hate it. I may love it once I experiment with it more (removing flavor wicks and such). But, out of the box I hate it.

I prefer top-coil (T2 or Vivi Nova), carto-tanks, and dripping.

What size does your brother want? Have you asked him?

If you take him to a B&M, he can play around and see what HE would like.

Clearomizers are cheap enough you can get one that works to his liking. I too know some have bad experience with the eVod as with all of them. Some is user error (wrong voltage, PG/VG ratio etc.) Mine is wearing out and I'm getting a plastic taste. Many don't get that. *shrug* So I'm trying others and will get another one of these for $4 -- I don't like the taste of my tank at times. I'll probably end up dripping.
I use VG only so it's tougher.

Otherwise GoBigGuy, if you can't get to a B&M and get your brother interested in trying one, it is easy for people to get overwhelmed. Usually people have to hunt for the perfect vape so even getting him on the right track is good. If you have a good battery you can sort the rest out pretty easy. Just don't order a lot of replacement parts until you know it works well.

And sample bottles, sample bottles, sample bottles. Also ensure he doesn't expect anything to taste like a Marlboro as it won't. There are a few good tobacco flavors out there but I forgot the name of the ones most popular with non-menthol smokers.

P.S. The Pro Tank 2 is recommended by a lot of people ...whether it is newbie friendly I don't know. I assume it works like the eVod and does use the same heads but costs more. It's not perfect either. Some like, some don't.
