My guess is that twisted coils offer a greater surface area than a comparably sized single wire. It provides more nooks and crannies for juice to cover and get vaporized.
Micro coils concentrate the heat over a smaller area than a "normal" evenly spaced coil. A twisted micro coil concentrates even more heat in that small area, providing a nice warm vape with a satisfying throat hit even at low nicotine levels.
I personally do not sub-ohm, as I get clouds of warm vapor and great throat hit from a simple micro coil and cotton at 1.3-1.7 ohms.
The above is, of course, only my humble opinion. I do not claim it to be fact, only know that it works for me.

No expert here but I have been playing with different setups. I also don't have the best equipment but it's getting me by until I finish my pipe mod. The coils I have made have been tested on an ego VV 1100mha battery with an AGA-T2 vaping MBV 65/35 Caramel Coffee.
I have made both standard and micro coils using 32g kanthal in single strand, double twisted and even a quad twisted with mixed results.
Have tested all coils with both 400 SS and cotton and kept the voltage at between 3.8 and 4.2 volts, (anything over 4.2 tasted burnt).
I was an idiot in not writing anything down until half way into it so some info is from memory.
Single standard coil 4/5 came in at about 1.4 with SS @ 3.8v has been the best tasting and produced the thickest cloud so far.
Everything else has been muted and/or light in cloud making.
A double twist standard coil at 1.8 and SS was the next best.
Currently I have a standard double twist @ 2.3 with a SS/cotton core wick that has a muted flavor and light clouding on the first draw and then a thicker cloud after until it sits for a wile.
With coils 1.8 and under killed the battery in a day, the ones over 2.0 get me a day and a half.
I have the next 2 days off and going to start over logging the results. If you would like I can post the results of what I come up with.
