I pulled out the spike wick from the bottom end. I took a small piece of SS mesh & wrapped it around a piece of silica wick, leaving a wicking tail of the silica. (The SS mesh just helps hold it up inside the spike.) I trimmed to size, fitted it up into the spike...from the bottom. Once I screwed the spike section back on, I pushed from the top until I felt it contact the coil. It must make contact with the coil for it to wick.
I messed with the spike wick a little more and finally got the wick out of the tip of the spike. I took a small paperclip, heated it red and pressed it through the little hole on top. Now it is clear and perfectly round, not crimped. I took a stitching needle and threaded it and knotted the ends of the thread 2-3 times to make a loop. I took the 1mm wick and cut it 4cm long, then folded in half over the thread so that the thread can pull the wick through the hole. I pinched the wick with one hand half way down the wick from the fold, so when I ruffed up the ends, that the top half would still remain twisted while the bottom half became fluffy. After you make the ends fluffy enough to make good contact with the coil --- Stick the needle through the bottom and the hole on top of the spike and pulled the wick through. The fold of the wick fits nice and snug in that little hole, just make it snug as possible with out pulling it through the top hole. Cut the thread, and you are ready to go.
Make sure that the knot of the thread is under the fold of the wick. The knot of the thread will help hold the fold of the wick tightly in the top of the spike.
