Two problems: smoke and accidental activation.

So I recently bought an 89mm supermini from v-cig in the UK.

It is a JOYE306A, (which I think is the same as a DSE104). Here's a picture: v-cig.com/images/Cig_part_sm.gif

Anyway, I just had two problems with it.

1) The first is when I put it in my playing card box (the best fit I've got at the moment) it lights up on it's own as it goes in. I'm not going to use the box anymore in case it lights up when I'm carrying it around. But I don't think it's normal that the thing should light up when it gets a light tap on the end. It's easily reproducable by giving the e-cig a slight tap on any surface. Is this a known fault or anything? Do I have to make sure my e-cig is never jolted?

2) I found out about the second problem by accident. I was looking at the exposed atomizer and it went off on it's own and produced actual smoke. I blew on it a couple times and it went off again and produced actual smoke. Well, it smelled a lot like smoke. I do use tobacco flavoured cartridges, so there would have been some left on there. Does anyone know what happened there? Is it just vapour that is more concentrated than I'm used to?

I should note that my atomizer does make a burning noise when I take a puff.

I'm thinking I should stop using the tobacco flavour so that if it is producing smoke I'll know by the taste. Because I imagine that atomizer smoke would be even more harmful than tobacco smoke.

Any help?

Sounds like you have a bad battery to me. I've had some batteries do the same thing and the supplier I bought them from replaced them free of charge. It sounds like the pressure switch inside the battery is activating on it's own. I'd contact who you purchased it from and explain the problem you are having because it is not normal. If they are a respectable business they will replace the battery for you.

I just checked my spare battery. It can be activated the same way but with significantly more force. The second battery plops happily into the box without going off. So it is a faulty battery! Thanks guys!

Now, does anyone know if I should be worried about the smoke thing? A couple answers would help me out...

Is it normal if I take off the nicotine cartridge and replace it with the empty cover, and it still produces smoke/vapuor for a while?

Are there any methods for telling if an atomizer is burning something? Are there any known faults that result in burning?

It is normal for the e-cig to produce vapor after the cart is removed and replaced with an empty cover. The steel wool mess still has some juice in it that it wicked from the original cart. I wouldn't do that much because you will end up frying the atomizer.

The burning smell may be just the break in period. Sometimes they have a burnt smell until it is broke in. The atomizer shouldn't be burning anything until you draw on the e-cig. Then it should only be burning the e-juice unless you are burning it dry...and that is not good. Change you cart or top off the cart when your vapor production decreases. You do not want to dry smoke your e-cig or you will burn up the filament in the atomizer...if that happens the atomizer is fried and is trashed.

In regards to your first problem, I have experienced the same thing with the Smoke Fifty One e cigarette but then switched over to the DSE901. The problem seems to be the cartridges on your model which are vertical at the end (where the hole you inhale through lies). This means that a very slight amount of decreased pressure due to wind blowing (happens when you move or bump or drop the e cig) will result in the LED activating and possible vapor production as if you were actually smoking it. If you keep the hole covered with a air tight cap it should resolve your issue or switch to a e cig model like the DSE901 which has a hole on a mouth piece requiring more suction to activate.
As far as your second problem is concerned, this is quite common because the cartridge acts to hold the eliquid until the atomizer is heated up, most models have the atomizer in direct contact with the cartridge in order to heat it up and produce vapor. The problem occurs when the eliquid is ejected into the atomizer but is not fully heated into vapor and the remaining eliquid stays on the atomizer, ergo when you blow on the atomizer (connected to a power source) it will burn off the remaining vapor. The cartridges that have "wool" are used to slowly distribute eliquid into the atomizer and thus produce an even rate of vapor, however if the liquid is directly on the atomizer it is burned up more quickly since all of it is in contact with the heat.

I would recommend taking a few tissues and stuffing whatever box you use to store the e cig, then place the e cig snuggly inside. A plastic air tight cap is also a good idea, if you can't find any of these I think silly putty would also do the trick.
