Been using the hard caps that are already on the tank for the first week of ownership and has worked perfectly. Replaced (for no good reason other than I realized they are not hard plastic, and thought I might be using the wrong cap) the hard cap on the tank this afternoon with the soft one that does not have a pre-punched hole, and notice there's leakage now.

Question- Are the hard one's even supposed to be used initially (no leaks on either one I've been using makes me think so!)

Yes, you can use the hard one! The soft silicone ones are just an alternative type.

I have been using the same 3 tanks (hard caps) for well over a yr now, and the same 2 atties (one is gunked up and needs replacement)> The key to success, do not remove hard plastic caps, rahter fill with a syringe or the droppers that come with one dram bottles. OTOH the soft silicone caps can be removed for easier filling. When things start to leak, change caps or use a new tank :)
