Hi there,

The first thing I remember when I think of my first vaping experience (almost half a year ago) is the terrible taste.. it was especially the after-taste that turned me off. The juice was some type of 'dekang rolling tobacco' flavour. And although it did not turn me off starting to vape myself, I tasted the same thing many times when I tried yet another type of tobacco flavouring. I'm still not sure what it is, but I think it is caused either by artificial sweeteners (I'm very sensitive to all those diet drinks, which give me a similarly terrible after-taste) or it is caused by some residu in the nic liquid itself (the base used by some manufacturers; this possibility came to my mind after I received some nic base that had the same awful taste).

Since then I tried several things to find my favourite juice. Browsed through all the info, lists and reviews about e-liquids on the different forums. Tried some out myself (but can not try them all: most e-liquid sold sold in my country is in online shops, so I need to order most of it on the internet and it would easily become a very costly adventure if I tried a lot of them). I also ordered some DIY stuff, VG and PG from different suppliers, some distilled and deionified water, a bunch of concentrated flavours (mostly dessert flavours from respectable brands like Perfumers Apprentice, Capella, Tast Puffs), and all the necessary bottles and needles to do the mixing and steeping. I could write a long story about it, but the short version is that I liked none of them much. And some are simply awful. So I have a drawer full of bottles now, but do not use most of it. I guess some of you might recognise that ;-)

Coming from smoking analogs, the whole idea of artificial flavourings didn't appeal to me very much anyway. I'm not someone with a sweetish appetite, and a juice with a flavouring of cheese, smoked fish, fried bacon or paella is of course even more hilarious..

Looking for juices with a minimal flavour profile I discovered the EcoPure line from Intellicig. I really liked it. Very clean with an almost indiscernible flavour, especially in the 'regular' type. The 'rich' variant has some very subtle sweetness in it. Since I tried it, the ecopure stuff has become my daily vape. I started with the strongest nic level of 15mg, which is incredibly strong stuff. This probably helped me getting off the analogs, but I tend to mix it down more and more (using VG and a drop of water), not because I have plans to quit vaping (I do not) but simply because the stuff is way too strong. You may think why I refer to 15mg as 'incredibly strong' but that is because their marketing is quite misleading. Intellicig measures the nic content in mg per capsule (which is 1/3 of a ml), so their 15mg stuff comes down to 45mg/ml. That's what I mean with incredibly strong.

Apart from the fact that I don't like being dependent on one supplier (as with everything; I like freedom of choice) I do not like the fact that intellicig has become part of BAT. For me, one of the nice things of vaping is to become independent of these big tobacco companies, so to find out that I am still sponsoring them was not such a nice discovery.

So my quest for alternatives continues, but I have not been very successful with that yet. Tried to recreate the ecopure stuff (using different combinations of VG, water and Ethyl Malthol) but I never came close. Also tried some other mildish flavours on the market. One that I found recently, which comes close in (the absence of) strong flavours, is RY4 18mg from Jwell (a French company that opened a vape shop in my city), which has almost no flavour and some nice but almost indiscernible undertones.

Anyone else on the hunt for subtle and clean flavours outside the categories of tobaccos, fruits, sweets, nuts, chocolates, coffees? I would like to know about your findings!

Try some Sugar Cookie from MBV, at first I thought it tasted a little odd, but after I vaped it for about a day, its now my go-to flavor. It has a sugar cookie flavor, but almost has a slightly spicy twerk to it.

Pretty much if someone says "Man this flavor is great", I most likely wont like it, but if someone tells me a flavor is gross that probably will be the flavor I think is the best.

It sounds like you may be one of the many who will enjoy unflavored. VG is a little sweet. I would guess (guess since I havent tried ecopure) that is unflavored - just pg+vg+nic and the rich is probably high or all vg. Since you have the supplies - give it a go and see if its close :)

Hi CreepyLady,

Thanks for the suggestion. I had tried that already, and learned two things from that:

- some of the base liquids have some nasty taste to them, similar to the taste I dislike in some tobacco flavours. I guess this must be impurities from the extraction process, so I disregarded these ones.

- purely unflavored VG base is too much. Not enough flavour. It's like breathing clouds of water damp in the shower. It needs something more (which is what I need to find out).

Agreed. You can buy unflavored in the nic level you like and try that alone ( many like it ) or buy some small bottles of flavoring and add a few drops.

ECF has a DIY section for that, but it's pretty easy.

Hi r77r7r,

Thanks, this sounds like a good plan. I'll try just a few drops of those mixing flavours, for example some caramel or cotton candy flavourings, and then see what happens. Maybe I should buy a dripping atomizer for that, to prevent a lot of cleaning hassle.

Cheers..

I would definitely try that. I bought a IGO-W recently and it makes many of the juices I couldn't stand taste pretty darn good.

Clean-up is super easy too (I turn my MVP up to 11 watts, then blow through the side aid hole until there's not much smoke coming out...and my wick is now pure white and clean). This also lets me taste all the different flavors I've been ordering without having to clean out messy tanks so the taste of the last juice doesn't linger.

I was in one of the very few e-liquid shops in my city, it is a French company that tries to settle here with physical shops, and the guy behind the counter wanted to try my vape. After one drag he completely disregarded the stuff I was vaping as being bad quality, too harsh, etc, etc. When I reponded that I like it he gave me a feeling that I have a bad taste

I'll never go there again. If someone is not able to realise that taste is subjective.. he lost me for ever :p (he had some nice stuff though)

Could you that, they ship to Europe for a reasonable price, and I see positive reviews about them. A pity they don't sell base liquids in smaller amounts, as I always like to sample their base stuff too when I order from a new shop.

I'll think about it. Thanks for the advice!

I went with Samplers everywhere I could. Made a spreadsheet for aerating/steeping and my rating. I have about 7 flavors now. Took me awhile to get through 12 plain strawberries. Others in the same boat. But, it is fun and it is only a couple of MLs.

How many did you try to get at 7 f(l)avorites?

Was thinking about buying a simple 510 drip atty, but this IGO-W may be the better solution, thanks.

EcoPure Rich fan checking in! Unfortunately, NOTHING compares to EcoPure Rich! Many have tried to make a simple EM flavored all VG liquid, but EPR is one-of-a-kind. I have gone through 70 mL in the last month and a half and unfortunately, I have to buy more -- it' pricey as hell for me, but I will do it because it's just a absolute pleasure to vape!

p.s. I wish they would lose the "mg" talk and stick to percentages (though I've only seen the confusion on other retailers' sites, like at digicigs.co.uk). I vape the 3.0% (30 mg), but I've seen people get super high nic thinking it was the exact opposite. I have written to them about this but got no response, though after just checking their site they have now included the correct percentages. It is definitely misleading, but oh well.

After half a year of daily Ecopure Rich I suddenly couldn't stand it anymore. Don't know what happened, but the smell of the liquid alone doesn't attract me anymore (to say the least)..

Maybe it was caused by the arrival of some top quality vaping stuff, such as my new GP Heron and ByLeo Sophia atomizers. Especially the Heron performs so well on the throat hit and flavour department (it's an extremely nice and solid device), that the nic level of the Ecopure 4.5% is way too much and the enhanced flavour reveals an obvious chemical component. Of course I can easily decrease the nic level by adding VG and a drop of water, but the chemical taste stays. The Ecopure regular is still nice, but offers so little compared to just base nic liquids that it can not justify the price of it.

My daily vape is now some good quality VG base at 2% nic level. Thanks to CreepyLady, who pointed out that unflavoured might be an option!

Speaking of unflavoured: trying various brands of base liquids I find that there is an enormous difference between them. Some are really nice, and even have a slight tobacco-ish background flavour, while others are simply horrible.

Dekang USA Mix is the first e-liquid I vaped, and for two weeks I thought it was the bomb, until I tried another brand. I'll never buy another Dekang anything.

My favourite e-liquids are neutral-tasting 'tobacco' flavors; my ADV is a flavor produced and sold locally (Paradise Vapes Muskoka Blend). Jughead's JokeSmoke Classic is pretty good, and you may be able to order it from Europe.

Welcome to the forum.

It sounds to me like you like you could be having one of two different issues:

1) You could be totally correct that subtle flavors are what works for you. If that's the case, I'd recommend ordering a sampler from Carpe Diem vapors. This stuff is very well reviewed and they state on the website that they prefer subtle flavors and mix their line that way. Honestly, I wasn't the biggest fan of their juice for that very reason - the flavors were good, but I wanted more in most cases. Could be right up your alley.

2) It could also be, as you mentioned, that you haven't gotten the quality you're looking for yet. If you like Grant's Vanilla Custard and it's the first "good stuff" you've tried, then maybe you should check out some of the better juice brands. I really enjoy Nicoticket, Ahlusions is very highly regarded here (and I'm waiting for my first order from them to try it out), and people rave about Five Pawns (but they're a little expensive).

Hope this helps. Good luck in your quest for your ADV!

Gosh, taste and perception is so subjective, but one I thought of right away is After-8's "Pure," which I love. After-8 is a Greek company (and an ECF registered vendor), and they also sell it as a concentrate flavour. I don't really know how to describe it, but it's not like any other flavor I've tried (it's not fruity, not herbal, not dessert-y, not very sweet; it's categorized with the tobacco flavors, but doesn't taste like tobacco), and I always have a tank loaded with it.

I can't promise it will be exactly what you want, but if you have vaping friends and you don't like it, I think someone will definitely be happy to get it.
