electronicstix sells one without a battery. I love mine. battery free while at work!
I still am just a bit confused on the USB passthrough concept. I have a Joy 510 and Rev Gemini and would like to get a USB passthrough for them. I am just unsure which ones to get and don't understand why they need a battery. Also do you ever have to replace that battery.

Thanks for you help

Here's my guess on the battery thing. I bought a usb passthrough for my 510. It had no battery, which I knew. Problem I ran into was that it wouldn't work in every usb port I plugged it into, the passthrough light would just flash a few times and it wouldn't do anything. The problem I believe was that some of the ports I was trying to use did not supply enough current. I think the battery is in-line so that the usb port charges the battery and then the battery powers the business side of things, so that it will work in practically any powered usb port.

My logic, anyway.

The USB spec says a device cannot draw more than 500ma (.5 A) to be a good device. The atomizer draws about a full amp (1A 1000ma) at 5 V which is what the USB spec also says.

There are 2 ways around this. Plug it in and hope the port provides enough current or find a way to make it work on 500ma or less. The passthrus with a battery do this. They don't even draw the full 500ma to charge the battery. The battery then runs the passthru. This sort can plug into and work with any computer USB port. Since it is the battery that actually provides the power and the battery is 3.7V just like a normal PV battery they run at 3.7V also.

Be careful with that, pretty much every different atty(depending on supplier) has a different resistance making it draw a bit more or a bit less depending on where you get it from. So where the 1amp draw may be correct for some attys, it may not be true for most others.

But, on the side note, the simple way around this is to get the straight 5v passthrough and a adapter for AC-> USB or Car->USB if you want to use it on the go.

Or get the Sit-and-Go which seems like a really good choice if the 3.7v is good enough for you. Its a whole portable PV on the go! :D

The 1A current draw was just a seat of the pants number. The specifics sure do vary. The basic point is that a passhru needs about double wht the USB spec says is allowed. Trying to get that from a computer port can lead to dead ports vs. simply not getting the power needed. My bad for not mentioning using a separate power adapter to power it. When you buy one, look for an adapter that's rate a full 1000ma (or 1A) when you shop. The ones that say iPhone compatible should do the trick but can carry a premium price.

My non-battery 5v passthrough vapes more than when I use the standard 510 batteries. It kinda spoils me when I have to disconnect and go offline without it. I do occasionally have problems getting it to work on some USB ports and even some I have to plug in a couple of times to get it to work. when it works, the LED flashes a few times then turns off until the manual button is pressed. When it doesn't work, the LED stays lit. Not sure what is going on inside of the computer when this happens. It's just a minor annoyance though.
