I eventually ripped mine off. It was too hard to put back in. I was going to buy the extra batteries and charger, but I decided to get some eLiquids instead!
Trouble getting it back in?!? I pop it in with nominal finesse. The crazy part is getting it open. Unless I'm missing something, I can't come close to getting it of without a paper clip, knife tip, or some other tool.

Exactly. It goes back in just fine. But, I have a paper clip on standby for it. And when I'm out and about and need to charge it, I just use the corner of a business card and it does the trick just fine.
BTW,
The trick to getting it back in is understanding the connecting tab. I fought the thing a long hard time myself till I realized "the way" to put the cover back on. The connecting tab doesn't function quite like a hinge which you intuitively think it does. That tab slides straight in and out. Get used to that and it becomes pretty easy. Not super easy, but pretty easy.
I say the tab doesn't function quite like a hinge because it is flexible, so after the tab is slid all the way out you can bend the cover up out of the way, kind of hinge like. Then two steps: step one) bend it back down to where the cover is parallel to and about 2mm away from the eVic. Then step two) slide straight in.
