I was lurking the thread E-cigs in the wild.. do need a signal? and thought the power symbol was a great idea. So, I put my art skills to work and made a version that I'd like to see. Let me know what you think!

As soon as I hit my five posts I'm going to put this in the proper thread, lol!

like it, like it a lot. It's simple, clean and on message. As a degreed graphic designer, I'd only suggest to lose the vapor coming out the drip tip. Those in the know will know...less is more IMO. I'd also look at dropping the mod down a bit in the circle, maybe 2x the gap between the circle and the sides of the mod? If it were a 1.5" window sticker I'd pay $5 for it and put it on my car. Could even make it "green" since we're not polluting either, though I'd want it in white. Wouldn't buy it w/the vaping tip though, I don't want that attention from the po po :)

Thanks for the advise, Non-Smoking!
I've already erased the vapor. I wasn't sure whether it would look like too much. I had tried a more solid, graphical representation at first but it read like a flame.
I'm not sure I understand the rest of your suggestion, starting around "I'd also look at dropping the mod..." Would you clarify that a bit for me?
I'll post the vapor-less image in a few minutes :)

Sure, i'll try. I'm merely suggesting lowering the mod (ecig) further down in the power circle. I'm thinking about twice the distance from the bottom than the gap is between the mod and the top of the circle opening. Got it? It's really hard to picture it without doing it and looking at it. Maybe a liitle higher, maybe a little lower, maybe right where it is. Designers notice stuff that nobody else does. Shrink it to half it's size and twice it's size and see how it looks. It could be on a billboard or a matchbook, the design needs to be solid enough for both applications. That about what I got out of 4 years of college :) That and a loss of short term memory for about 6 years after!!!

Got it! Thank you for taking the time to detail the changes. Who'da thunk I'd come on the e-cig forum and get design advice? I've got 4 years in a Theater degree I never use. I call my time at college my "wonder years" because I wonder what happened during that time...
I'm currently trying to start an art business, using a 3D tool in an oddball way (shameless plug: facebook.com/ArtofRyanGrant). I don't use Photoshop at all. I do use Paint Shop Pro for simple edits like resizing & overall color enhancement.

Staying on topic, here are the edited versions, with the mod dropped lower as you suggested:

They do look better that way. All of the reference images had the middle line a lot higher and I had already lowered it to a level I thought looked OK. Just didn't take it that extra step further. Thanks again for the advice!

nice, I could do this all night. The other design trick is to squint your eyes and see what you see. I see the black line between the drip tip and battery as a new opportunity for improvement. Follow me here...envision the circle as being complete and move the black line up or down to the location where the circle intersects the mod. Finally, CURVE the black line to match. This will add dimension to the mod and really tighten up the design. It's a natural progression to me. I think it'll look sweet and totally hold it's own in the design world. Now we just have to trade mark it and start selling the stickers! I want a free one and some design credit :)

if it looks off, adjust the curve more or less. It doesn't have to be perfect, just look perfect. There's another trick, don't use a level hanging a shelf or painting. Older homes and ceilings sag. Having a level frame may look way off because the line above it where the ceiling and wall come together is not straight. It doesn't have to be straight, it has to LOOK straight. That is the objective after all right?

Thanks for the additional tips! I definitely give you credit for these design details and I'll give you a free sticker for sure, if I ever produce any. Some credit also has to go to the guys in the original thread who made most of these suggestions. I guess this really makes it a true community effort! Mine was just the hand that drew the drip tip, lol!

I understand what you mean about getting something to 'look' right rather than making it perfect. I just played around with the break in the mod and moved it down a bit. Too high and it looked weird near the tip. I did the squinty eyes thing and tried to get it to match as an unbroken inner black circle to the outer white one. Here it is, much bigger in the image space, too:

And I truly, truly appreciate the advice. It seems like most people aren't willing to offer criticism or it comes as "You should do THIS!" without taking the time to explain. I love the kudos, don't get me wrong, but I'm just as interested in what doesn't work as well.

no worries, glad to help. I definitely wouldn't insist you do anything to your design, but I'd always think "could be better". Looks perfect IMO.
