I'm really torn on this - years of indoctrination that 'smoking is bad' has got my gut telling me that this advertisement is bad.

But.

There's no compelling evidence at this time that vaping is bad for you.

Think of the ad in the context of a product that's harmless, in a world that cigarettes don't exist.

Is it any worse than Santa chugging down bottles of carbonated sugar water?

The evidence (as it stands) says 'no' to me.

But dammit all if we haven't demonized smoking (and any connection with it) so much that just seeing that ad provokes a negative reaction from me - and honestly, one that isn't justified.

They've trained us well :(

Vaping is still not mainstream, maybe someday people will be more educated about it, but today is not that day. To the general public vaping is the same as smoking. A filthy habit.

I disagree with this. I think antis are doing what they can to present it in a dirty light. General public, as I encounter it, doesn't have that view of eCigs. More like, they aren't sure what to make of it, but seems rather harmless or far less harmful than smoking.

I'm more curious about backlash among vaping community. And that reasoning, I'm sure is coming from....

My problem is with how it is and will be used against vaping. We can't afford that image being stuck in peoples minds right now.

Which I can relate to. It will be used against vaping by the antis. But it will also be yet another opportunity for vaping community to do some educating. If our only response is, "yeah, I thought that was despicable as well" then guess what message the general public will take from that? I'll give you a clue - they'll think that even vapers know that what they are up to is somehow bad.

Instead, we could say that it is on par with coca-cola Santa, or arguably even more tame than that, as nothing in the ad shows santa vaping nicotine. We wouldn't even have to introduce nicotine into the debate, as the ad isn't introducing it. And coca-cola Santa could be drinking rum and coke for all we know, which I'm guessing not too many parents would be in favor of that, now would they?

Name anything about how eCigs are currently being marketed. Anything at all. And antis will find a way to use that against vaping community. Because, if left entirely to the way antis are framing the dialogue, all things that vaping does (i.e. offer flavors, offer way to not smoke, offer enjoyment from inhalation, offer technological toy), all of it is something to use against the community that is clearly engaged in a filthy, dangerous, highly addictive habit.

I'm thinking their position will go on for another 10,000 years regardless of how vaping community and general public respond. Short term goal is to get general public on their side, and deception or lack of integrity in how their message is conveyed is not out of the question.

we have to remember that Santa Claus (a la Clement C. Moore) is a couple hundred years old,,,,It's this poem that redefined our image of Santa Claus,,,,in 1822, when the poem was written, they didn't know what we know NOW about the dangers of smoking,,,,,,we know vaping isn't as dangerous as smoking,,,,,but John Q. Public doesn't. and regardless,,,,,,,,I don't think we need to use a beloved childhood icon to sell something only adults can do,,,,,,,,

John Q. Public may have better understanding of (lack of) dangers from vaping because of ad and surrounding controversy.

We don't need to use santa icon to sell vaping, as it could theoretically sell all on its own merits. But if we do use santa icon when santa is used to exploit many products, all of which are arguably as harmful or more harmful than vaping, then I'm still curious what is the issue among vapers?

I think i know answer to that, but best, I believe, that we think this thru rather than give sound bite responses that don't appear all that well thought through.

A: Yes, some of us remember VERY fondly the magic if the very early years, the immense butterflies in our stomaches and the sheer amazement on christmas morning that "holy crap - santa didn't see a THING I did this year!" It's short lived, but yes, some of us really do want our kids to be able to have a few years of -really- believing in magic. The world would be a much better place if us cynical adults could maybe manage just a bit of belief and wonder now and again.

B: Up here in rural NH we shoot plenty of deer, and I've harvested my fair share of venison with both bow and rifle. When my eldest asked about Santa's venison I assured him that the reindeer Santa keeps are quite safe - Everyone knows that Santa carries a shotgun and returns fire.

C: The gratuitous drug reference you end your post with is unwelcome here according to the forum rules. If you've bothered to read them, you'd know it's for a good reason too.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. I think that the magic of Christmas with Santa for kids is awesome. . I am milking this for every moment with My son.. He is 8.
Now I just showed him this picture ad (he knows about vaping and why I vape and how it saved me from smoking) and he said it just doesn't look right. It's wierd and he shook his head. ..
I doubt it will make him want to vape or persuade him in any way but it's just"wierd" .....
This is all they could come up with? I think If they would have posted a Christmas sale coupon it would have gotten them more sales.. lol

Anyway, merry Christmas and Happy holidays everyone!
Vape happy!

It's weird to me too - but not because it's wrong - it's weird because smoking, and by association vaping has been denormalized and people that do it - you, me - everyone on this forum are no longer accepted even by ourselves as normal.

I might be a little blunt here... The world is turning into a crappy place to live for one simple reason... Everyone got a stick up their rearend and they cant figure out how to pull it out themself... People female dog, moan and whine over pretty much every thing... So your kids take up smoking? Its someone elses fault you say? NO! Youre the one solely responsible for whatever the H your kid does thinks and says!

People cant control their kids anymore, 13 yearolds stab, shoot and abuse grownups and elderly people every day, and parents point their rage at a santa poster?... Get your toiletfiller together and gain control at your freakin kids THEN whine about a poster... If a kid takes up smoking, drugs, drinking or vaping its the parents fault for enabling them to do it... Not a damn billboarf telling them to do so, if thats the case the kid is just plain stupid and without the ability to think for themself, and who should teach a kid that skill?... The parents
