Seen the true effectiveness of vaping for reducing tobacco smoking, the UK government took a favourable stand with respect to vaping, in the interest of the public.

Before setting their official position, the UK government consulted some impartial academic personalities, which stated the truth about vaping: that it is not healthy, but much more healthier than tobacco. This was the basis of that figure of PHE - that "vaping is 95% healthier than tobacco".

We have a cross-party political committee in the UK Parliament which is trying to revert the 20 mg nic limit, the 2 ml clearomiser size and the advertising.

This positive standing toward vaping of the UK authorities is something to celebrate, when you see the controversial American approach, the nonsense of jail time for vapers in some far Eastern countries, the vaping bans in China and India, or the excessive taxation in some European countries.

This story is of particular interest to me as I work in an NHS hospital that recently introduced no smoking policy on hospital grounds. In February overnight they took down all the smoking shelters and put some signs up. The result of this is tons of smokers smoking right up to the only other sheltered places, ie main entrances, and filling the entrance lobbies with that smell. And it's not policed because it's 'our duty' as staff members to tell complete strangers what to do apparently.

What they've done wrong and what the Brum hospitals have done right - is to not have an alternative option, using the classic carrot stick approach. Instead they've done a blanket ban, Proving once more that prohibition approaches do not work and can make things worse. I think the Brum model will catch on. Leicester have fully integrated vaping into their Stop Smoking clinics now. Scottish prisons have banned smoking and replaced with starter vape kits.

I really hope that the results of a positive approach in this country will have a positive affect on other governments in the long run.

In the short term it won't change those knee jerk reactions but if in x amount of years there are solid figures showing significant decrease in tobacco fatalities compared to less vape friendly places hopefullyiit will change minds.

It's why the SF thing is completely nuts, banning vapes but continuing to approve of cigarettes is such a cynical attitude.

San Fran's problem is it is being run by do-gooder liberals who seem to always want to throw the baby out with the bath water. Speaking as a do-gooder liberal I don't understand other do-gooder liberals at all sometimes.

Banning vape while being able to buy tobacco is just nuts.

It would be sorta fun in a lawsuit against SF to claim if they have the right to ban vaping, they have the right to ban cigarettes too. After all, both are legal and if the concern is public health it would be best accomplished through a comprehensive ban on tobacco products. Petition the court that if the city is so concerned over the public health risk of tobacco products, they should impose a ban on the sale of all tobacco products within the city.

Then sit back and wait for SF citizens to react.

It almost smacks of special legislation, doesn't it?
