I'm wondering what in the design would create "attenuation" of flavor and throat hit, since in essence what this tank design is replicating is direct dripping. I would have to think that the size of air channel cutouts in the spike plate and and the size of the air channels in the tank would have to be the culprit.
Generally, the culprit is both surface area and distance. The more surfaces there are for vapor to condense on, the more the air channels are constricted (thus accelerating the flow of vapor, cooling it in the process), and the further the coil is away from your mouth (more distance means more time for vapor to cool) all contribute to attenuation of flavour and alteration of throat hit (cooler vapor tends to have a sharper hit).
Almost all tank systems suffer from these problems due to a number of factors inherent in their design:
1. Atomizer plate and spice necessarily sit directly over the coil, providing the first surface against which vapor condenses.
2. Tank air channel are narrow, which concentrates and accelerates vapor flow, cooling the vapor and giving more surfaces on which vapor will condense.
3. Tank cartridges also have two chambers near the mouthipece end that give even more surface area against which vapor will condense: One chamber where the air channels widen into the hollow mouthpiece, a plastic separator with a small hole (further vapor acceleration and cooling and another surface on which to condense), then a secondary chamber with the same attributes, which repeats the process yet again.
The chamber and mouthpiece separators can be removed creating a large hollow area where vapor will exit straight to the mouth, which does help to mitigate the attenuation somewhat, but there's not much that can be done to deal with the distance the vapor has to travel, nor the obscuring spike plate or narrow air channels.
I have a design that could help greatly improve the tank system situation, but it's a bit more complex than current designs. It would, however, allow for a direct path for the vapor to travel from the coil to the mouth. I just have to figure out how to convince a manufacturer to try the design. Maybe I'll talk to Innokin, I have their ear.
