I am wondering what the original red dot they are talking about since this is apparently a German award.
In the USA, however, there is an old story where some or other municipality made liquor store signs illegal at one point. The store owner wanted to solve this problem of course, and the designer decided on making the liquor store signage a single red dot and very specifically and intentionally did not copywriter it so that any liquor store owner could use it as well. All the liquor stores put up red dots. The customers very quickly equated red dot with liquor store and it became so ubiquitous that even after the law was removed liquor stores kept using it.
