i had to break this message down, because i needed to respond to individual parts.

> First... you DO NOT want to cover up the vent holes. If you batteries ever fail, it would turn into a pipe bomb.

from the evidence i have seen on exploding 18650s, they always get very hot before they release any gases, at which time a user feeling such heat in a vaporizer should throw it as far away from people as possible. assuming a user chose to keep the metal vaporizer in their hands, by the time the the battery released gases, the battery would already be in a condition of thermal runaway (a runaway oxidation reaction feedback loop inside the battery requiring 150C/300F), and in a second or two, the battery itself would explode, to include everything around it, vent holes or no vent holes :) vent holes would only serve to make the explosion more directional, which would likely cause more extensive damage to a hand holding the device, whereas a uniformly strong (small) container would serve absorb more energy in the deformation of metal before the pressure was released at the weakest point (turning the object into a missile in the opposite direction). if possible, in the situation of a small container fit into a closed hand with an explosive charge inside, the best solution would be a uniform strength, so that the energy would be absorbed by the metal container deformation uniformly and to the greatest extent possible, then releasing itself radially (equally in all directions), thus exposing the human to the least amount of energy as possible. ie, i'd rather have an M-80 explode inside a solid cannon ball than inside an iron pot w/lid in front of my face.

the only way to make a cylindrical device safer that is enclosed in a hand with a face/head on one end is to make it as universally thick and strong as possible, to including the threading (such as with Titanium or some exotic alloy), thereby absorbing as much energy as possible before releasing any energy.

as for any little pressures (and i don't know where such little pressures would come from), air can already leak around the threads as you say.

> Around "the button" IS totally sealed. The inside with the electrical parts are potted with2 types of epoxy, so that moisture could never effect them.

wow, that is a great selling point ...

> As far as a hexagon nut... I've looked at them. The problem is, when you close the battery end, it still may not match up.

i am not sure i understood this. are you talking about 2 hex nuts on each end matching up? i considered that, which is why i only asked about 1 end, preferably the atomizer end, so any rolling would keep the atomizer on the upper end.

> My tooling machines are pretty accurate, but it also depends on the length of the batteries you put into it.

i only care about 18650. 3.7V is more than satisfactory. i really can't understand anyone that would want more than that. 18650 + 510LR gives a very strong hit in 2 seconds - in my experience.

> But your ideas are really good ...

hehe - but if they were as good as yours, i wouldn't be trying to by a vaporizer from you :)

it would seem that Vaporizers would not have the same troubles as these flashlights, since they are only used for seconds at a time. there is no extended period of high current drain as with Lasers/Flashlights, and they are usually single cell devices. it is the high-drain aspect that starts to generate heat and excess oxygen in LiCoO2 batteries, which creates a feedback loop at 150C/300F: increasing-oxygen/oxidation->increasing-heat->increasing-oxygen/oxidation->increasing-heat ... etc. and it appears that LiCoPO4 batteries are explosion-proof, and may be utilized more in the future. also, batteries may explode in a charger, or even when carried as a spare. the explosions of 18650s do seem fairly powerful, and it would seem like only some very thick steel could contain them somewhat effectively (1/4in is my guess). we take our chances in life ... i read it is a 1/100,000 chance of getting a defective battery (internal short).

Wow... What a day! Picked up from son from a half day at school and had to drive to D.C. to drop off caps and ST Housings to my metal plater. This usually takes about 3hrs. round trip. Well, afternoon, Friday D.C. traffic on I95 is insane! I don't know how people can drive that every of their lives. The trip took over 6hrs.! And, of course, I didn't take my truck, but my wife's car that has a clutch. Never again in the afternoon.
I hope everyone else had a good day though!
