The Rocketeer (1991).
When stunt flyer Cliff Secord (Campbell) stumbles upon a mysterious rocket-powered backpack, he realizes the
device could make him an overnight sensation at airshows. His mechanic friend, Peevy (Arkin), thinks he's crazy and Jenny (Connelly), his aspiring-actress girlfriend, thinks he's dashing, but, of course, jetpacks don't spontaneously appear by themselves. Turns out this one is a prototype designed by Howard Hughes (O'Quinn). It also turns out that the star of Jenny's current movie, the handsome and dashing Neville Sinclair (Dalton, doing a fine job of impersonating Errol Flynn), is after the rocket pack for himself. Add a ring of gangsters and a dash of Nazis and soon Cliff isn't just the fantastic rocketeer of airshows; he's a superhero fighting to protect his friends, his girl, and his country from the agents of evil. A wide-eyed, gee-whiz kind of adventure yarn spun from the fabric of pulp serials and shot in the nostalgic golden light of yesteryear's swashbucklers. The story's comic-book plot (it's based on Dave Stevens' 1981 graphic novel) is uncomplicated and undemanding, but those in the know will enjoy the in-jokes (Flynn's rumored Nazi sympathies, the Mondo Hatton doppleganger gangster, and others).
