Oingo Boingo, Only a Lad, 1981.
Oingo Boingo gained a larger fanbase following the release of Weird Science (for whom they had performed the titular song), but they had previously been well-known among the Southern California New Wave scene. Originally known as the The Mystic Knights of Oingo Boingo and making a few appearances in the 1970s, the band got it's first big break with the release of the film, The Forbidden Zone, directed by front-man Danny Elfman's brother. Their first "hit" was a song from their eponymous EP, which was later re-recorded for their first full-length album, named after the song "Only a Lad," released in 1981.

KROQ 106.7 FM Pasadena
Perhaps one of the most influential radio stations in the 1980's was a station transmitting out of Pasadena, California. I caught a weak signal of the station one night in 1983 and the station's New Wave, Punk, second-wave ska, and Alternative music kept me coming back. One of the bands that found early success on the station gave back in the form of a promo spot/station ID, heard below:

Jean Shepherd. He was active in both the 60's and the 80's, as well as before and after. We used to always listen to him on WOR, and still love his Christmas Story.

American Bandstand
American Bandstand began as a local program on WFIL-TV (now WPVI), Channel 6 in Philadelphia on October 7, 1952. Then it was hosted by Bob Horn and was called Bob Horn's Bandstand.On July 9 of 1956 the show got a new host, a clean-cut 26 year old named .... Clark. When ABC picked the show up, it was renamed American Bandstand, airing it's first national show on August 5, 1957. The show was moved to Los Angeles in 1964. From 1963 to 1987 Bandstand was on only once a week, on Saturday
