And, last (since I think it's the last day of the contest), 1989...

The Ocean Blue, Between Something and Nothing (1989)
With the release of their self-titled album, the Ocean Blue put themselves on the map of indie pop groups to watch. Featuring jangly guitars and introspective lyrics, the band became a darling of college radio and modern rock, alike.

XTC, The Mayor of Simpleton (1989)
Following on the success of Skylarking, which surprisingly spawned the controversial single "Dear God," XTC returned with Oranges & Lemons, their 11th album, in 1989. The album retained the psychedelic sensibilities of the previous album while adding the pop energy evident in their earlier weeks. Two songs, in particular, received heavy play on MTV, "King for a Day" and "Mayor of Simpleton."

Bob Mould, See a Little Light (1989)
In between his stints with Hüsker Dü and Sugar, guitarist Bob Mould released two solo albums. The fist of these, 1989's Workbook, offered a stripped down, more acoustic sound that, while different than the wall-of sound approach of his earlier band, nevertheless pleased fans and critics alike. The album established Mould as a major songwriter and paved the way, through his introspection and use of varying styles, for alternative rock bands (R.E.M. and Nirvana are often cited as examples) to mature as artists. "See a Little Light" is the single released from the album, a poignant pop song that reached #4 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart.

Kate Bush, This Woman's Work (1989)
Written for the John Hughes film, She's Having a Baby, this emotional piece from avante garde songbird Kate Bush was the second single released from her sixth album, The Sensual World. The haunting song delves deep into the personal, pushing into the edge of life's truth, and striking the heart with it's wrenching, hopeful, and plaintive plea.

My first car, a 1986 Suburu loyale. Good little car, took everything I threw at it for years, and when it finally died it died in style by blowing the head gasket near Vantage Washington, a good hours drive away from a bus stop or anything else for that matter. . .hitch hiking was the only way, and boy....sometime I'll tell you all about my driver Gary. . .
