Hi, I'm new here, and am totally hacked off with Skycig! and have been for months with their cartridges lasting less and less time and the battery life etc. I quit smoking in March and am looking for a good alternative that will last.

After much confusion and jargon and an overwhelming number of choices, for whatever reason I've narrowed it down to a few choices to get me set up.

Firstly, Vapourzone's Apollo Rocket 1100mah (silver) :VapourZone - E cigarette kits
or
Liberty Flights Ego Vision : Vision eGo

Has anyone used either, or both of these that can advise me?

I don't really want a 'baby, bog standard 'starter kit', as I'll no doubt want to upgrade quickly, so I'm looking for something not too complicated, capable of lots of vapour and throat hit, that I can use different flavours with, that doesn't need charging every 5 minutes.

I vape mostly whilst driving and at home at night.

Any other suggestions for good intermediate devices that will last are very very welcome (as right now my head is swimming with variable volts, LR's, ohms, watts, volts, tanks, carts, attys, and god knows what else!!) Help!!!

Well it really depends on what you're looking for here. "Intermediate device" is a bit vague, as there are so many with so many different options. I have not used the Apollo Rocket, but I have had a similar eGo device. I suppose as a step up the eGo is decent, but what do you want from your device?

TBH if you are planning on really getting into this then there's no point in mincing words. Advanced users tend to favor variable voltage devices because this allows you to adjust for flavor tweaking, throat hit, intensity/heat of vapor, and it allows you to experiment with a variety of different atomizer resistances to really figure out what works best for you. VV ultimately allows you to control the experience to a fine degree, which many people find favorable.

There are many devices with variable voltage functionality, including the eGo Twist (possibly what you are looking for at this stage). For me it's the ProVari and I don't think I'll be switching soon (bought it 2 years ago, have the newer version now). The device has a lot of protective features, has lasted through hundreds of concrete pavement drops, and vapes like a champ. It's expensive, but for me it's worth the price. Honestly variable voltage was kinda like a revelation to me; moving from lower to higher voltages really changes the flavor and experience of any eliquid, and being able to fine tune my device made me love vaping all over again.

Thanks for your reply, I looked at the ProVari and really liked it, then I saw the price! Having said that I'd rather make a dearer outlay now than mess about trying other devices, only to end up finally shelling out for what I should have bought all along!

Would it be suitable for a total novice to go that advanced straight off the bat? You asked what I want from my device, and whether I intending on really getting in to this. I am, as I used to love smoking but actually prefer to vape now I've made the switch. As to what I want/prefer..I used to smoke 20 a day of a fairly strong brand, so the throat hit is important to me. I also really like to exhale plooms of vapour, and looking into this I see there is a lot I can tweak with PG/VG ratios. I don't however like too much heat when vaping, and prefer a cooler draw. Battery life is also important to me, and lastly the aesthetic I suppose - I'm not much of a fan of the clear 'tank' type, or overly long devices. Something sleek and neat looking. You mentioned "experiment with a variety of different atomizer resistances" so I guess I'd be asking what you use, or could recommend on a VV device for me that wouldn't produce too much heat etc. As you say though, it's probably something I have to try myself to find my own preference.

Well tbh I don't think there's any stages of this other than what you want to learn about. In my experience, I always bought something I knew I would want and then learned through experience/posting/web surfing how to get the most out of whatever it was I purchased. Your basic preferences sound similar to mine: lots of vapor, great TH, nothing too gimmicky or too oversized, only I prefer a warmer draw. All of these things (other than looks) can be tweaked with VV, and the ProVari does a great job. As for battery life, I change the regular 18490s once per day, and I vape like a madman. They also have extended batteries. If you want a smaller model, they offer minis, but their batteries are a bit weaker (~700mah versus 1100mah for the 18490s). However I see you needing to change once per day and charge both at night.

As far as attys go, I use a rebuildable atomizer (RBA). I do this because they produce the most vapor, the cleanest flavors, are CHEAP to maintain, and you can create whatever resistance you want. This is a bit more advanced, as many posters would tell you, however with the proper amount of research on the forums and online (not that much, tbh) you can become proficient in rebuilding your atty in a week or two max. If you're not ready to go to that stage, then go to avidvaper.com and buy a few attys with resistances from 1.8ohm-2.5ohm. You probably would prefer the 2.0-2.5 range because it allows, with the right voltage setting, for a greater degree of cooler draws to choose from.

If the price is really unappealing to you, there are clones of the provari such as the Lava Tube, Vmax, etc. I've never tried either of these devices but they seem to have NEARLY the same functionality. Check out a few reviews on youtube of both to see if they may fit your needs without spending the extra cash. IMO, however, the quality and aesthetics of the provari are superior (only as a secondhand opinion, as I have not used the others as I said).

After more surfing and plenty of reviews via youtube and the like, I've decided the ProVari V2 mini is the one for me :) I've seen it used now with both tank style set ups and cartomiser (or is it atomiser?! lol) attached. Ideally I want a 'kit' setup which contains both options so I can try each and settle on what's best for me, keeping the spare as a backup.

All that's left to do now is shop around for the best price / kit contents (charger, case, spares etc), and away we go! Any suggestions as to best place to buy are welcome.

Thanks for all your help! x

I personally chose to go through ProVape.com because I wanted the warranty -- just my preference. You'll have to let me know what you think of the device when you've finally received it.

As for tanks, cartos, and attys go... an atomizer is generally designed for reuse, and is utilized most often for "dripping". These devices have the same external design as a cartomizer, though usually are shorter, but internally all there is is a coil and wicking material. Drip in your fave juice, and vape. Cartomizers are a bit longer than a traditional atty and are designed with the coil towards the center or bottom of the device with a polyfil material encompassing it. Purpose of cartos originally was to be disposable, and hence they are cheaply made and break easily. Polyfil also allows for filling of the carto, meaning you don't have to constantly drip. A tank mod generally uses a modified cartomizer (usually just has slots cut out of it) to expand its liquid capacity. Tank goes over slotted cart, fill with juice, and enjoy for the day without dripping.
