Greetings to all. I am new to the DIY mixing world and there is a question i have (okay, lots of questions). From all of the reading and research I have done up to now i have not found what advantage there is to using a VG or PG based nic over the other. Is there something I have missed? Does one produce different results than the other? Can someone please explain and try to illuminate me.

Thanks in advance.

Depends on the PG VG ratio you want the final mix to be. PG is easier to shake up (thinner) to make sure the nic is thoroughly dispersed, handy if you freeze a stockpile as cold it's even harder to mix. If you want a very high VG component, than that would be the way to go, otherwise PG is easier to handle in my experience.

I use PG based nic simply because it is easier to work with. VG is MUCH thicker and if you're storing it in the freezer then it will be nearly impossible to work with, it will be thicker than honey and it will be next to impossible to suck it up into a syringe. The PG also thickens in the freezer but not so much that you can't measure it in a syringe. You can always calculate the amount of PG into the equation to get the right PG / VG ratio anyway, so it really doesn't matter which one you use--it's all going to get mixed together in the long run anyway.

so basically there is no difference to the end result and it is just the matter of convenience. i thought there was a much more complicated reason. if it all just gets mixed together in the end then i guess it is just whatever works for you.
thanks guys, i appreciate you taking the time to answer. more questions to come.....:)

Well, I wasn't going to chime in, but I guess I will since I'm the minority, being a dog and all. I buy nic with vg.
I purchase 100mg and dilute it down to 50mg with additional vg into 8oz glass bottles. I freeze all but one, and when I'm getting down to an ounce or two or three, I take out a new bottle.
I haven't had any problems mixing with the thick consistency, but I use a 14 needle for extraction. Why do I buy vg? I prefer my mixes to have a heavier vg ratio.

Edit: grammar dog shaking head

I have read the lifespan of nic in VG is not as long as in PG... are you putting it into a freezer to increase the lifespan? I was thinking locked in a dark gunsafe would work but maybe not? I could buy a mini freezer with a lock just for this application possibly once I really get going but I am also just soaking up info at the moment giving it time to think heavily on

I just opened some nic in VG that was in the freezer for two years, and it was great. I've been using a large bottle of VG-based nic that was watered-down for the last 1.5 years, stored at room temp, in the dark, and it got a bit dark, and slightly harsh. I don't think PG makes much difference in shelf-life.

VG is thicker, and produces thicker vapor than PG. I add a bit of distilled water (10%) to my VG mixes.

Personally, PG irritates my throat and lungs, and tastes bad (sort of musty.) VG tastes sweet, and does not cause me irritation.

I'll chime in to. I buy my Nic in VG. I mix for a few people besides myself. Since my flavors are mostly PG based I figured by buying my Nic in VG it would give me the widest flexibility in PG/VG ratios. I can make basically anything from 80/20, to 20/80 (all VG when I mix unflavored + DW). I'm really glad I went that route since for myself I've been going all VG except flavoring and adding a bit of Distilled Water to thin the mix. Good luck with your DIY! :toast:

Cheers,
Steve

well than, I may have to try a strictly VG flavorless if that is the one giving me the sweetness

That is correct. There are many proponents of flavorless mixing as it has no chance of any added chemicals that may be in flavors, and they enjoy the taste of the VG.

There is heavy speculation that food colorings, and certain chemicals in a good bit of bakery/cream flavors are dangerous to inhale even in small doses.

why adding water though? just to weaken/make it not so thick or is there more reason

100% VG is going to be virtually unwickable in nearly all set-ups, so you were correct in saying that it would not make it as thick. I've seen dilutions go as high as 20% of the entire mix.

Some people report an increase in throat hit when diluting with distilled water. You can also use pure grain alcohol such as everclear, which is indicated to give even more of a throat hit.

Other dilutants include saline, which is reported to make flavors "pop."

There's a lot of options here.

All nic no matter what the base will oxidize. That being said, storing in glass in the freezer, filled to the brim, will slow oxidization. Vg will oxidize more quickly than pg if in same conditions.
Also adding distilled water will thin the Vg allowing it wick better.

Just getting into DIY.....I have 60mg Nic in VG in 500ml.....how well does the bottle need to be shaken? Is there any separation of Nic and VG to where it needs a lot of agitation? Or is it pretty much ready to use?....

Definitely mix it! I'd mix it and separate it into smaller glass bottles and freeze what you won't use in a month or so.
