If you have a pencil-flame torch, use it to burn and clean your wicks. Starting at the wick end, heat the wicks until they glow red hot. Slowly heat the wick up to the metal portion. Then do the same to the wicks on the other side. Makes them look just like brand new. Be sure to use a propane torch, though; a cigarette lighter will not get them hot enough and will actually turn the wicks black from carbon in the cooler flame.
