I'm a few weeks in... figured I'd post this here because it deals with some n00b .....
I haven't messed with a straight atomizer or straight cartomizer... from the start I was drawn to clearomizer tanks, for the simplicity and also 'cause I think they look cool. Could have gone with a cartomizer tank, but it seems like there's more effort involved in that, and I don't really want to mess with it.
When I first got my KGO VV, it was accompanied with by an ego Clearomizer at 1.8 ohm and some liquid from Hoosier E-Cig. Got the hazelnut coffee and gansta's paradICE. Hazelnut coffee was alright but couldn't taste it after a day or two, the Gangsta's ParadICE was very nice but I am not yet a fan of fruity flavors... Jumped around on voltage, never really found a sweet spot for either, and had issues with keeping the flavors after a day or so of vaping.
Got a Vivi Nova tank at 2.4 ohm, and so far have only filled that up with VapeRite's Perique and VR4. I tried the VR4 in my other ego Clearomizer and was never able to bring the flavor out in the way that it pops with the Vivi Nova. With the Perique on the Nova I got a great campfire kind of flavor out of it. When I put that in my clearomizer I never really got the same clear flavor that I wanted.
My Smoktech Redux clearomizer came today... with a broken O Ring at the base, though I don't see any signs of leakage so far... With a 4.0 ohm head on it, I put the perique in it, but it has not been able to fully express that flavor as the Nova did.
So my experiments at this point are all over the place in terms of ohms, voltage, flavor, etc... but I feel like whatever I put in my vivi nova at 2.4 ohm, I'm able to get a good taste out of it. The VapeRite VR4 for sure takes the cake for continued flavor and pleasure. The vivi nova seems to also do better than the ego clearomizer does across the board with flavor, though I don't know if that could be due to the difference in ohm/voltage.
I'm confident in recommending the Vivi Nova tank at 2.4 ohm with a KGO VV (or ego twist, I assume) set to around 4.5v with just about any juice.
With the 1.8 ohm ego clearomizer, I haven't been able to do as well. I enjoyed the Gangsta's ParadICE with it, but just haven't hit a good spot with other flavors/voltages/whatever.
The Smoktech, I'll see as more I work with it... Broken o-ring manufacturing flaw is an issue from the start, and a 4.0 ohm I'm still trying to find where the flavor on something else really pops.
So here's what I know:
1) A 2.4 ohm Vivi Nova tank will make anything taste great around 4.5 volts.
2) An ego Clearomizer at 1.8 ohm will do okay, but doesn't seem to taste as good as a Vivi Nova tank no matter what you do.
3) The Smoktech has issues with O-rings, and while it seems to work well at 4.0 ohm, I'd rather be using my vivi.
For people just starting out, as I am and especially was a couple weeks ago trying to find info...
Get a VV battery, KGO VV or Ego Twist.
Get a Vivi Nova tank.
Get some good liquid, forget the artificial .... go organic or natural. If you like tobacco flavors, the VapeRite VR4 is a very sweet, tobacco based flavor that will do you well. The Perique... I enjoyed, but it will taste, at its best, like a campfire.
Find a good ohm/voltage range... I think the 2.4 ohm vivi head is great at 4.5v. I haven't found a similarly awesome range at 1.8 ohm or 4.0 ohm.
Good luck - I haven't smoked a real cigarette in about a week, but had cut down to a couple per day before that, and am currently smoking like a single mini-cigar (romeo y julietta) per night with booze.
