I have been rewicking and recoiling my viv nova's with cotton yarn and the flavor is great. I have also rewicked with 100% cotton embroidery floss. I'm posting this here since I don't have 5 posts yet.
Cool. I've been considering that myself. Which is working better? What size of wick are you using? I'm too cheap to pay $5 to ship $2 worth of cotton. I'm hoping to find something locally.
I'm using resistance wire. Non resistance wire is for long coil leads where you don't want the extra resistance of the legs that don't do anything but conduct electricity. It's also to prevent heating of the leads to the coil where they might burn something.
The leads are so short on the Vivi that there's no point in using non-resistance wire. It might shave off 0.001ohm or something. I'm using 34ga. Kanthal-A wire. 32-36 will also work, just adjust the number of wraps. More wraps on thicker wire and fewer on thinner wire. Six wraps of 34ga. gave me 3.7ohms. I don't care because I use a VV, but the next time I do one, I'll use 5 wraps which should get me close to 3ohms or slightly above that. If I had it to do over, I'd probably use 32 ga., but 34 works fine and it's all I could find in Kanthal-A.
The resistance is rated in ohms/foot of wire. Unless you want to do a lot of complicated math, don't worry about it. Just use 4-6 wraps and see how it turns out. If you're way off, do it again with some adjustments. It's so fast and easy, it's not worth trying to predict in advance.
There is a good seller on Ebay for Kanthal-A wire. A 75' spool costs about $7-8 shipped and got to me in 4 days.
I suggest thick wick on the Vivi. A short fat wick seems to work the best. At least bundle your wick if you're using thinner strands. With normal CE2 wick, you'll probably want 4 strands.
Get Kanthal D if you have to. Nichrome is a lower temp wire and won't last as long. Silver is the non resistant wire. I'm surprised if COV has any resistive wire in stock. If they do, I don't know what it is, nichrome or kanthal. They would be good for wick though.
how do you rewick one ? Is there a tutorial somewhere for that? I don't want to mess with any wire but I have enough cotton yarn to last three years in my closet because I crochet with it.

Since the existing coil is wrapped pretty tightly around the wick, it might be really tough to get the old wick out and push a new one in without damaging, distorting the coil. But, I've never tried.
