I'm pretty new to this sport, but I have a very technical background so it's right up my alley.

I've read a lot of posts about the higher voltage units producing better flavor but I'm curious about how many people get the burned taste with the higher voltages or LR cartomizers. In my limited experience and experimentation I've found that there is a definite coil temp limit with at least some juices. I initially thought that the taste was the wick burning, but after cleaning the cartomizers and dry burning them with a cherry red coil the wick is still white which leads me to believe it is the juice that is burning.

My current best setup is a simple 3.7v battery with a slightly modified CE2 R5 2.6ohm. I have to cut the inner silicon cup back so that it doesn't pinch the wick in order to keep it from tasting like a burnt tire. The modification keeps the wick nice and wet under the coil, but even then I still have to be careful about drag length to keep if from tasting burnt.

I hooked an unmodified CE2 to my Bench power supply and played around with different voltages. This particular cartomizer worked best for me with longer drags at lower voltages (3.2 range), and was very hard to keep the burned taste away at anything over 4 volts. Am I missing something? Does even higher wattage arrangements cook the crud off and start tasting good again? Are there certain juices that stand up to the increased heat better?

My current favorite concoction is the Johnson Creek Tenn Cured VG mixed with Dakang Nuport PG. It's pretty darn nice for an ex menthol smoker. The menthol gives it a good strong hit on the inhale and the Tenn Cured gives it plenty of vapor and nice mellow tobacco undertones on the exhale.

I appreciate all the advice and experiences you fine people are willing to share.

Sounds like you know what you're doing and should keep fiddling until you find your sweet spot:) The juice being vaped dictates the voltage for me. 6v with an HV atty seems to rob my juice of flavor and adds a burnt taste and uses juice faster unless I'm using HV juice. The SB and Omega haven't had 6v in them for weeks. Loving 5v vaping with a GLV2 + 510 atty or dual coil carto and at 3.7v on a Silver bullet with a low ohm 306 atty or dual coil carto. It seems the low ohm dual coil cartos and LR attys at 3.7v give the benifits of 6v vaping without the negatives. I may change my mind when the next new thing comes out.

I went from KR8 w/cartos to an eGo-style with Clearos. I had a very similar experience as for burning. I too noticed the immediate burning taste with the 2.6 Clearos and had to modify my vaping style - at least with the new batts I had gotten. Which, when I tested them, they put out 3.8v under load. With the KR8's, it was much harder to burn the fluid, but it was possible. It didn't seem to matter the fluid I was using - several different flavors from one manufacturer, one from a local shop and with or w/o mixing these with a bit of VG - they all tended to burn just as easily if pushed too hard.

I dry-burned one of the fresh Clearos to make sure it wasn't "shipping fluid" or something, but they seemed to be bone dry now when new. Not to mention that the burning taste would immediately go away if I did the pulse technique or if I only fired for a couple seconds in the middle of the drag.

I now wonder if some people using tons of voltage and/or LR attys actually LIKE or have gotten used to the the burning taste and just see it as normal and don't realize there's anything wrong? You know, sort of like acclimating or acquiring a certain taste? Or if the burning taste is a more direct replacement to analogs????

I stumbled on the pulse thing too. It actually works pretty darn well and I can keep the CE2 tasting clean for a good while.

Getting used to the burning taste makes a lot of sense too since we were used to igniting stuff before. I don't like the burnt taste but I could probably get used to it if I didn't feel like I was smoking PVC or some other plastic.
