The manual for the voopoo drag says to use 18650’s rated 35A or higher, preferably from Samsung or Sony. User manuals for other mods say to use batteries with a rating this high too.

While there are a couple of Sony 18650’s out there with a “temperature-limited” current rating that high there are no 18650’s with a true 35A continuous current rating. The Samsung 20S and LG HB2/4/6 are the highest, at 30A.

There are LOTS of rewrapped batteries with exaggerated current ratings though, up to 60A and even higher, that you might be tempted to use at high power levels. Don’t do that until you know their true current rating.

Some possible battery choices for the two-battery Voopoo Drag or Drag 2 mod (or any regulated mod):
    • For up to 90W, the 3000mAh Samsung 30Q or Sony VTC6.
    • For up to 120W, the 3000mAh LG HG2.
    • For up to 150W or if chain vaping, the 2500mAh Sony VTC5A.
    • For up to 180W, the 2000mAh Samsung 20S or 1500mAh LG HB6.
Running any battery near its rating though results in very inefficient operation and a lot of voltage sag in the battery. This can result in early low/weak battery alerts from the mod.

As always, never use a mod that seems to be malfunctioning, keep the plastic battery wrap and top ring insulator in PERFECT condition, and always use a good external charger (I don’t have one to recommend yet) on a non-flammable surface and always when you are around and awake.

My thanks to Angela Hawkins (ladyhawk) for telling me about the Voopoo Drag manual!

Man, you made me jump, really!
I mostly use my Drag I at about 50w, and I have two pairs of brown LGs. I was planning on a Puma 200w and getting for it two Sony VTC 5A, just to be on the safe side. I rarely go below .25, so leaves me confident! Thanks!!!

You don't NEED a 25 or 30 amp 18650 if you never vape over 120 watts with a dual battery mod. In your situation, the LG HG2 3000mAh 20 amp batteries will work just fine for your application up to 120 watts. (60 watts x2 = 120 watts)

Should you decide to vape over 120 watts in a dual battery regulated mod, then the Sony VTC5A 25 amp batteries would be advised. (75 watts x2 = 150 watts)

FYI, when using a regulated mod coil resistance is nonconsequential, but you knew that. :)
