I wanted to start a thread where we could compare weapons, tools, accessories etc.

The first VS conversation:

The .223/5.56 round vs the 7.62x39mm

This has been discussed at length on many many forums, but figured one more discussion wont hurt. I will let others start and then throw in my 2 cents.

The .223/5.56 round vs the 7.62x39mm

I know I am going to be in the minority here, but I prefer the .223 round. I am sure I am biased because I have access to .223 rifles and have only used the 7.62 sporatically and never consistantly.

My reasons are: NATO uses the 5.56 or .223 and therefore there are more available worldwide (in fairness NATO does use a 7.62x51 round less frequently). They are lighter than the 7.62 and therefore it is easier to carry more rounds. Also, it is my understanding that the accuracy on a 7.62 drops off after about 200 yards. Whereas the .223 is accurate to ridiculous distances in my experience.

There you go. Tear me apart SKS and AK lovers.

I am a fan of the 7.62 round, but wont tear up anyone who uses the 223. My thing is, I just hope no matter what round a person chooses, they are proficient with that particular weapon. A guy with a bolt action 22 magnum and knows how to shoot it will be a better asset than a guy with an AR-15, 30 round magazine who doesnt have a clue what hes doing and wastes all of his ammo with a "spray and pray" technique.

For me, I like an SKS over an AK or AR. Probably because it was one of the very first high powered rifles I ever owned and I can tear it down and re assemble one blind folded. With the whole after market stuff available for all of the guns, getting one set up the way you like, is relatively easy/affordable. At the moment I am considering getting a bullpup stock for the SKS.
