I may be relatively new to vaping, but I've always been a "tinkerer." I've been looking into and researching building my own mod since I ordered my first Evo. I'm no stranger to basic electrical work. I did a lot of computer modding and car audio type things with I was younger, so wiring, soldering basic parts are pretty simple to me. That's why I'm hopping right into VV / VW.

Something I haven't worked with are pre-made boards and Integrated Circuits.

So, from what I've found, I have two options for VV or VW.

Mad Vape's VV Regularoe Board Kit
Pros

  • Cheap
  • Cheap
  • Cheap (this is cheap)

Cons

  • A lot of small parts to be soldered in a tight space

DNA 12
Pros

  • Small footprint
  • Only need to solder wires
  • Passthrough Ability, means I can use a smaller battery since I'm always near a USB port I can use to charge

Cons

  • Expensive (compared to the other kit)
  • Passthrough Ability (only a con because more money for the USB board)

Anyone have thoughts on these two option? Any other options I should be looking into?

I have built quite a few mods from scratch, and there are MANY options to build your own mod. There is a MAJOR difference between the 2 you listed. One is VV and one is VW, I know you stated this but I wanted to clarify the difference.

The DNA is one of the ONLY VW units I know of on the market. This allows the unit to automatically change voltage up or down to provide the same wattage no matter what atomizer/cartomizer/tank etc etc. you have on the mod. All the other solutions I know of are VV. VV allows you the user to adjust the voltage to where you like it, but doesnt automatically change when you put a new carto/atty/etc on. Heres an example.

Lets say you like vaping at 10 watts.

VV - using a 1.6ohm atty you would have to put the voltage at 4 volts. If you change to a 2 ohm, you would have to set the voltage to 4.5 volts to get the same wattage (10 watts) and this would give you a similar vape.

VW - you set the unit to 10 watts. You put on a 1.6 ohm atty, the unit automatically adjusts to 4 volts. if you then switch the atty to a 2 ohm, it automatically switches to 4.5 volts.

I really have started to migrate toward the VW concept, but currently there is less info and help out there. There are some hurdles too, on a VW board (DNA) its tough to do a display screen to show the wattage due to the fact there are few premade solutions to display this.

I can't tell you which one to go with, thats really a personal preference thing, but I can give you some resources. One of the best guys to chat with / read posts from is "Breaktru", here is one of his threads on a VV unit He is using the ptn04050 caz, which I have used too and it is a great unit. In fact they will send you one FREE as a sample, cant beat free ;)

PM me if you want any more info!!

Look up Mamu's threads/video on the Nivel chip ... VW with a built-in on-board display.

Scott- I have looked at this board and heard great reviews about it, BUT the cost is prohibitive for my needs. Last I checked it was difficult to get (from Russia) due to lack of US suppliers, and when you can find it, price per unit is around $70 usd plus intl shipping. At that rate id be almost tempted to buy a zmax when the price comes down and tear out the board... lol

Do you know of any US suppliers and if the cost has come down? Only place I have found it is HERE

Sadly, no ... on both counts. The last I had heard, the Polish site was the only place it was possible to get them, although Click Bang had an interview with the Russian who makes the things and on that podcast the Russian (Ivanov?) gave an e-mail address for direct contact and said he would sell chips to US buyers directly ... other than that, I don't know much and you seem more up on the subject than I am ...
