Take a Deep Breath if You Want to Try Competitive Vaping via WSJ

The article does a decent job of covering what cloud comps are and also the community debate over the impressions that cloud comps leave.

Whether you personally like them or not, it is starting to get mainstream media attention.

Apparently the WSJ fan base is largely of the mindset that smokers AND vapers are stupid and will all die soon in Darwinistic fashion.

I read website comments in moderation. One of my local papers did away with their comments section and it was one of the best things they had ever done. They had a bad trolling problem. An article could have been "these grapes are green" with a photo and the comments would have digressed into an socioeconomic race war, as they usually did about everything. - They might have comments enabled on the subscriber side. I don't know. I'm old school. I'd rather just go buy a paper if I'm going to pay for it.

I was thinking about linking the Gizmodo article as the main post but the Gawker sites comment sections can turn into viper pits even if the post is positive or neutral. I opted for WSJ instead. That way people could critique the article from the original standpoint.

Not exactly a positive article on cloud chasing.

Not from the perspective of a cloud chaser, no. Most of the people in the demographic that read WSJ don't have a clue as to what vaping is or the internal community debate over comps. I suppose if someone was aiming to expose

I like that because of how anti-smokers exaggerated the supposedly huge clouds of smoke from tobacco cigarettes. It's like, 'There, how do you like THAT!' Easily ten times more 'smoke.'

I'm sure if they could see how actual smoke permeates they'd be less quick to judge that vape clouds are worse.

Usually my iStick 20 with a Nautlius mini is my on-the-go gear, so I don't chuck clouds. Only once did I have an ANTZ problem while vaping outside. (Long story. I'll tell it sometime, just not here or unless asked.) Everyone else doesn't care. I've even seen other vapers chucking clouds, always outside and as long as they aren't blowing it in someone's face, again most people don't care. They keep moving.

Every time I see/walk into a foggy B&M or watch a vapecon with massive haze, all I can think about is the Madrigal industrial air filter from Breaking Bad.

Consider yourself asked.
I would like to live vicariously.
:)

I've never had an ANTZ say anything to me about vaping.
I can only hope that someday...

Ha! Okay. - First off for everyone else, TL;DR: Just skip to the next post, this is anecdotal.

There is a busy bus stop. I despise it. I'm in a city (No point in driving.) where there are usually 20-30+ people. More when it is bad weather. Waiting for the bus I decided to vape. I'd seen other vapers in the wild in that area on break so I did what they did. With everyone piled over at the bus stop, and not wanting an argument, I walked maybe 15-20 feet away over to the wall. Near no building entrance doors and where no one was standing. I'm vaping away, quiet. Nautilus Mini so I'm obviously not chucking clouds. It was a S'mores liquid so it wasn't pungent.

A family of six stops halfway between the crowd and me and starts chatting with someone knew going in the opposite direction. I go back to vaping and check the time. The teenage girl with them walks directly over no more than a foot away, dead center. The teenager starts open mouth forced cough/hacking, and I mean hacking at/on me directly, while glaring.

I'm not the most intimidating looking person in the world, which is why I'm guessing the teenager thought she could get away with it. I got ....... I went from 0 to 60 in a split second. I screamed at her while pointing that I was standing away from everyone else intentionally and to not stand in front of me and to get away, now. As the teen walked away I'm still screaming that coughing at someone was a good way to get attacked by a stranger. That she was lucky that I wasn't someone unstable. (Disclaimer: This is the internet, I might be unstable for all we know.)

The adult motions to act like he was going to say something to me and I just shook my head 'no' while glaring. I honestly thought I was going to end up in a fight for screaming at his teenager coughing on me. I continued to vape for another five minutes until the bus showed up. The adults said nothing but started coughing as I walked past without the PV in my hands. I let loose with a string of obscenities that still hangs over the harbor today.

They stopped. - Life went on. The bus ride sucked as we were packed in like sardines.
That was the only time 'in the wild' I had problems as a vaper with strangers.
(By telling this story, I'm probably jinxing myself.)

That day I just had enough. I hated when people would open mouth fake cough at me as a smoker. I treated this no different. - If I had been cloud chasing that day those people would have lost their minds.

And I'm 6'5" and 250 lbs, and I'm guessing that's why this never happens to me.
But my reaction might be quite similar to yours.

Reverse that and you have my height. If I had had better gear that day I probably would have clouded the kid out and not screamed at her as much. - Or I would have ended up in more arguments because of the difference. Pick and choose your battles.

On the positive side: One day at a station I was normally vaping. (Where I wasn't supposed to with the same on-the-go gear. There were five other people smoking combustibles that would have gotten stopped and fined first.) A driver saw me when they from across the lot. He hopped out and literally started chucking comp level clouds. Mind you no people were on that side of the lot. Before my ride arrived the 'cheers' motioned the mech and I did the same in return. - There is a time and place for cloud chasing in the wild.

Am I going to be entering cloud comps anytime soon? No.
From time to time I like watching people cloud chase as long as there isn't etiquette failure in play.

Why not save your energy and carry one of these for self defense?

There are sizes available for everybody. You might prefer something with a bit more power.

I laughed. I think that clicking noise would annoy someone enough to keep them at bay.

I'm sure ESPN 17 will start coverage of these competitions soon...

For amusement I might have wondered what a cloud comp would be like if the contestants had the lung capacity of a freediver.

In all seriousness: I'm neutral on Cloud Comps. I find it is a niche. It'd be nice to see it clarified that it is a niche to the outside vaping world, as most people are rather 'middle-of-the-road' on their PV use.
