Should there be a "Warnings" sticky on this subforum? I'm just now starting to research rebuilding and in my limited knowledge it looks like I need wire and wick.

Wire is the biggest thing I don't see much info about. There is the one sticky about types and resistances (thank you for that, it's very helpful) but are those types the only kind I should use? I mean, is there a reason I should only use the most obscure, hard to find type of wire? What about any old wire I can pick up at the hardware store? I'm guessing there's a reason I shouldn't use those? Are there dangers to using other types of wire? Or are they just not very effective?

Same question for wicks, although I've seen lots of info about what to use and what not to use. I understand that it's mostly personal preference, but are there any dangerous materials out there? Like everyone insisting on using 100% this or that, unbleached, undyed, boil it first, etc. I'm guessing the bleached, dyed ones are dangerous? Or just nasty? What if they are only 80% cotton? I definitely think there should be a sticky if there are dangers to using certain types of wicking materials. You know kind of like the diy subforum has all the warning stickies. I just think it would be helpful for those of us researching it.

Any insight is appreciated.

Also, if there is anyone out there that can explain in extremely simple terms how to get the different resistances that would be great! From reading I'm confused whether the gauge of the wire or the number of coils makes the difference (maybe both?). Specifically, 3ohms is my happy place. Most of the info I've found so far leans more towards how to get low ohms. How do I get high ohms?
