I can't honestly explain a bitter taste however I have twice now had a rubber like taste. After taking the coil apart I noticed a very small burn mark on the tip of the rubber grommet, the tip that is closest to the coil. The coil did test fine, no short, so I can't explain why the resistance wire got so hot at that point. Perhaps my rubber taste is your bitter taste.

I also used 5 wraps for my coils on a 4/40 screw using 32ga kanthal A1 and was getting around 2.2 ohms. 4 wraps would get me about 1.8 ohms. I just recently switched to 30ga kanthal A1 and I use 6 wraps for the coil and I get around 1.5 ohms. I double over 2mm wick and pull it thru for a total of 4mm. I'm really liking the 6 wrap 1.5 ohm coils. Yes you can fit a 6 wrap coil in the head without a problem.

What are you guys wrapping the coils with (how wide are the loops)? CJ, it sounds like your coil is too low in the base. I wrap 10 coils with 30ga on a QTip stick, squeeze the coil so each coil touches, place a pin through the coil and rest the pin in the slots in the base while setting the coil in the base. This sets the exact height needed for the coil. I then thread cotton in the coil instead of silica. Hope that helps

They can touch each other (better conductivity), not either side of the base. Watch how wonderful it lights up when you burn

well thanks Bob! i guess people space them to get maximum area. I am a guitar tech, I can rewire any electric guitar, but our resisters are always encased in something!

I have 32 gauge, just about to try this, i guess 5 turns being close together wouldn't cover much area.

Damn - everywhere i have looked says space them they can't touch etc..I was thinking, it's the SAME piece of wire, why can't it touch..DAH learning curve.

I'll give that a shot later this evening. Thanks for the suggestion.

Try more 'turns' at least 8, all touching

    No you can't
I recoiled my Protank coil last night. I used 32 gauge Kanthal and 2.5mm silica wick. I coiled the head to 2.2 ohms (5 wraps). I doubled the silica wick when wrapping. I used a lighter and heated up the wire and wick (separately) before winding and I did a dry burn at 3.3v after. Now I'm getting a weird (almost bitter) taste. Any ideas?

Did you wash the wick prior to being used?

    What can do this.
    1. Dirty tank.
    2. Wick not clean.
    3. Juice flavor changed. (add 2 drops of vingar to 1ml of juice to bring flavor back)
