I am sorry... I was diagnosed when I was 22 years old... now that you know you can take necessary steps to improve how you feel. It isn’t the end of the world although I was seriously depressed for 6 months or more after I was diagnosed after that I decided to dust myself off and keep my chin up. It will get better overall with some bad days here and there ;)

and yes, it does make sense!

MMm....lilith, please don't be offended by what I'm about to say. But if I were you, I would be very skeptical about the diagnosis.

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and depression about 9 years ago. I did alot of research on it, as that is my nature, and basically it is a diagnosis of elimination. When everything else has been tested and found to be negative, fibromyalgia is given as the diagnosis, much like excema is given for unknown skin conditions.

However, at around the same time I started having alot of digestion problems. A few years after that I ended up in the hospital with diverticulosis. I was over-stressed at my job and my eating and sleeping habits were very poor. It took its toll on my health. This is related, you will see why soon.

Flash forward to 2009. I have not been taking any meds for FM over the years (because I hate presciption meds), and still had been experiencing the muscle aches, the tiredness, the depression, the insomnia, etc, but to a lesser degree since I had made some lifestyle and dietary changes. Then I start reading about Candida. Interesting. Candida is an overgrowth of yeast in your body. It usually happens because you have too much sugar in your diet, and you've taken too many antibiotics over the years. So now you have no good flora in your intestine. Most of the people who had candida have the same complaints as people with fibromyalgia. Also, I went for a checkup and had elevated blood sugar (oh no!). This is something to take seriously, as I do not want to end up with diabetes.

So I tried a regimen of probiotics in the morning, and went on the Atkins diet. It was kind of a two-for-one, because the anti-candida diet is the same as Atkins for the most part, NO SUGAR. Yeast feeds off sugar. Anyway, I was denying the yeast the sugar it needed to live and at the same time it was better for my insulin levels. Plus I was repopulating the good flora in my intestine. It took about 3 weeks but then I started feeling like a new person. Energy returned! No more unexplainable deep muscle aches (if you have Candida this is a buildup of glycerine in your muscles), no feeling of tiredness after eating. I sleep better now too. I did, for a time, take anti-depressants when I received that diagnosis in 2002, but I haven't take them in over a year and I don't feel so 'moody', or burst out crying for no reason. I do not believe that I EVER had fibromyalgia or depression. I think it was all caused by poor diet and lifestyle.

As a society we consume too much sugar. It's in all of the processed foods we eat in many different forms. It affects your insulin levels and also causes yeast-digestive problems. If you want, I can send you some links via PM if you are interested in reading about these topics.

I hate to recommend meds but it helps during a flare... did they give you anything to keep you from being miserable? I am not surprised it was 13 years ago for me but I remember them poking at the tender points and being very very uncomfortable. Not fun.
I was prescribed Topamax and Restoil (sleep med). Medical MJ is legal here, I plan on applying for a license soon- it's the one thing that DOES relieve the pain for me, for several days at a time.

Thanks for your post. :) I don't consume a lot of sugar as it is, more fruits and veg here. :D I might reconsider Atkins again, I've done it before, but I don't know that I want to because I wasn't losing anything at all the last time I did it, and couldn't find the cause.

I already have arthritis, and I am a childhood abuse survivor-a trait that is rather common amongst fibro patients. :(

Lillith, I'm very sorry to hear about your arthritis and childhood abuse. I hope that you were not insulted by my long post, I wasn't trying to devalue your issue. It's just that I've worked in the medical profession and have seen alot of misdiagnoses, and wanted to share my own experience with you.

I hope you get relief and improvement from the course of treatment you choose. Good luck to you.

good start. I would apply for the license. I found that when I was able to sleep better it greatly reduced the number of bad days and even though it was completely out of character for me ( I used to have an aversion to exercise:D ) I did eventually get into yoga and that helped with some of the muscle pain. Now I try to exercise regularly even though I hate it. lol. It took many years but with watching my diet (sounds like you already do that) and recognizing things that trigger I have been able to go med free for 3 years. There are also some who think there may be a link to the fluoride levels in your body... a friend urged me to get the test but I have not.

At least you know ... hope you feel better soon!

I hate to hear that Lillith. I can only imagine what you are going through. I have chronic nerve pain but it's just in my lower leg. I cant even imagine it all over my body like you have. You have the world's best resource at your fingertips. Research research and research some more. You will be surprised what you can find.

I have to agree 100% on this. My sister was diagnosed with the same thing and laid off the processed foods. Worked wonders for her! It's worth a shot! Good Luck !

Lilith I have fibro too, I have had it a very long time, for me now that I look back I am sure I had it as a teenager.. Now I'm 41 and I hate the h*l* it has put me through, to many doctors to many misdiagnoses, I really feel your pain.. I tried MJ but it didn't help me much, of course I didn't try vaporizing it which is what they recommend for fibroheads (our nick name lol) I have done yoga, I can't say enough about it, the meditation alone works wonders for me, I have tried probably every type of drugs out there for it and can't stand them and most of them didn't work for me so now I am on just one, it's a narcotic but seems to be the only one that helps me at this point but I am okay with that really, if you ever need to talk let me know, I have been through it all and have tried just about everything, but of course we are all different so what works for me might not for you.. Any of you that want to talk about it let me know..
