amperage (amps) is the current the battery delivers when attached to a certain resistance. The batteries have a certain safe limit that they can deliver, if this is exceeded there is a chance the battery will overload and vent (burst into flames). this is normally only an issue with subohm coils (below 1 ohm) in mechanical mods (no circuit board to regulate the battery)

for a better understanding of batteries and their safe use we have a great blog by Baditude

hope this helps

Here is a pretty good summary of amps, watts, volts, etc:

HowStuffWorks "What are amps, watts, volts and ohms?"

But from a vaping standpoint, if your PV has a weak amp switch, say 2.5 amps or lower, it can't always handle effectively the power requirement for low resistance heads (atomizers, cartomizers, etc) resulting in poor performance. All of my PV's have 5 amp switches which usually can handle any head with a resistance of about 1.2 ohms or higher. If you want to use heads with lower resistance and get the full benefit of the lower resistance, then you will want to get a mechanical PV and use protected batteries with it.
