yes I have a ohm reader

I don't have notes on that particular guage kanthal, but this is what I do when trying something new:

Cut a length generally 6-7 inches and do make a coil that looks about right, mainly based on my notes now. Then I will record the mandrel size and number of wraps plus the ohm reading.

If you have a Smartphone with Android...get the Vapor's Toolbox....most comprehensive, easy to use app for coil building. Also has a tab...for watts/resistance it'll give you amps and volts.....or Volts/ohms....gives you watts and amps. You can put in type of wire, gauge, diameter, ohms....it will give you wraps required.

I'm against using any form of website to calculate "wraps" which completely differ with different size gauge wire and coil diameter. I'm going to sound like a snob but so be it... if you're building coils sub-ohm or not you should have at the very least a small ohm reader which is 20 bucks practically anywhere these days. Don't go to a website, test it yourself that way you KNOW for sure what you have.

Youre right, but they give you a good start..

I'm just curious, do these websites have magical powers? Can they tell you when you have a short? Does Panasonic or Sony use a website to "calculate" the voltage regulation on your TV? Would they ever try, heck no, they don't want to sell you that one TV that wasn't made correctly and have it blow up in your house.

Youre right, but they give you a good start..

In my opinion they promote laziness and make it easier to do something really stupid.

I use the a fore mentioned site to get an idea of what I need to do to make a coil to the specs I want, then I test them with a multimeter. I also feel that they are way safer to use then just going on the net and asking how many wraps you need.

Fact is there is no definitive answer to how many "wraps" you need. A 4 wrap coil on a 2 mm isolator won't give you the same resistance as a 4 wrap coil on a 5 mm isolator. A 26 gauge 4 wrap coil won't give you the same resistance as a 32 gauge resistance. Asking how many wraps was already a bad idea from the get go.

That said when people start building coils you don't want to get to point where people just point them to a site that practically does it for them, you want them to have as much manual practice as possible before sticking a unregulated pipe bomb in their mouth. Half the fun of learning to build coils is playing around on an atty and seeing the difference a 22 gauge wire has from a 28 or a 32. While doing that you're learning that's the whole point.

Listen I'm not referring to anyone in particular but there are some really dumb people out there, you don't want to make coil building all about looking up a site and having at it. Some people are dumb enough to do this trust me.
