I think there comments come from being uneducated about the topic of vaping. ........

and from being judgmental!

some things I have said
-- gosh, thanks so much for your support (sarcastically)
-- I switched to shut you up, but you are still whining
-- just stare at them
what I'd like to say but so far I've been too nice:
-- and you are still a jerk
-- and it's your business why?
-- judge not, lest ye be judged.....

Hello everyone -- I'm a new vaper -- a little over 2 weeks ago -- and a 40-year pack and a half a day smoker. I haven't had an analog cigarette since I started this and finally don't really want one. I do feel proud but several of my family members and friends (smokers and non-smokers) have said "well you really haven't quit smoking" you're still using nicotine, etc. Even my husband who stopped smoking cold turkey 14 years ago says I'll never "quit smoking" as long as I'm using my vape! So far, I've just kinda/sorta agreed with them, but I do feel like I've quit smoking! I'm just wondering if y'all have encountered this attitude and what do you say? Thanks for any input.
I tell them that nicotine isn't really all that much different from caffeine.
They are both stimulants with fairly low-risk profiles.

Oddly enough, I still think of myself as a smoker. Even though the smell of cigarettes on my boyfriend and friends bothers me a lot and I have fought the occasional urge to have "just one" I still feel like a smoker.

I assume that'll go away as the months without an analog add up. Also, I still have a half of a pack in my car as a safety blanket, even though I haven't touched them, I fear if I give them away I'll buy another pack because my mind still thinks maybe I'll want one.

I have however noticed that when I was asked for a lighter to borrow, I didn't have one stashed away anywhere! That made me happy :)

Thank you all so much for your replies and for your support! Y'all have some great answers! Really I guess the comments from my family don't bother me much because, like many of you said, I did this for myself and I feel sooo much better already. My husband even said that I'm not doing all that coughing/wheezing like I was before which was the main reason I wanted to quit cigarettes. Everyone on this board is so great and so helpful so I'll be back with questions! BTW - I'm also a caffeine addict -- that caffeine e-juice sounds like a great idea!

Coongradulations on quitting smoking! We support you. :) If nicotine equated to smoking anyone eating vegitables would be a smoker. I like the effect nicotine and caffine has on me and have no intention of giving up either one. I don't think I want greens for breakfast every morning lol. But it seems there are people who just cannot stand the smell of vanilla, mint or peaches.

Have them check the video out in this thread on the first post!!!

ECLAT Electronic Cigarette Study Press Release!

You no longer smoke if all you do is vape... the act of smoking is the delivery of nicotine through incendiary means of combustion using the analog tobacco cigarette ( results in over 5000 different chemicals of inhaled toxicants... over sixty known to cause cancer) These are known as TSA's, Nitrosamines, Alkaloids, etc.

E-cigarettes (PVs) only use four to five ingredients Propylene Glycol (usp, pharmaceutical), Vegetable Glycerine (usp, food Grade I or Kosher), Distilled/Purified water(optional), Alcohol(optional), Food Grade flavorings, and Nicotine solution. After FDA conducted testing to disapprove ecigs under comparison to already approved NRT (nicotine replacement therapy) programs in the U.S. The eliquid from various samples were tested and found to contain trace amounts of some of the negative compounds found in analog cigarettes but in a concentration that was 1000 times smaller in measure than in the FDA approved NRTs already on the market...... Some of the other chemical components were found to be immeasurable at levels that were found to be to small to be consider hazardous to the health of human being and most animals.

That video will touch on a lot of this!!

Vape Happy... Stay off the stinkies and do you!! Don't worry about them!!!
If they don't smoke, they don't know ..
And if they do smoke, they don't care!!!
If they used to smoke but quit long ago, they could care less!! Generally the way it always is!!
You look out for you and let them do the same for them..

You have quit smoking. To those that tell you that you haven't, it all comes down to a lack of understanding on what an ecig actually is. If a person wants to learn about it, then great. It can make for a great conversation. If they don't, I'd just smile and say "ok, whatever you say." You know what you're doing and don't need to defend a thing.

I feel your pain! It's so frustrating. Here's what I tell people:

I'm off the cigarettes and all the carcinogens they put in them.
I'm still on the nicotine...and it's not the nicotine that kills you...it's all the other stuff.
I like my nicotine.
We know just how bad cigarettes are and there is no way that these can be as bad...or even close to being in the ballpark.

I also show them this video of Katherine Heigel and David Letterman vaping on The Late Show:

I've found that it's difficult to explain to non smokers because
A. They can't relate
B. The only research they've ever done was on tv

Here's something I reserve for only the most difficult people :sly:

Let's say nicotine is the caffeine. I might prepare 2 cups of coffee. They look similar, they smell similar, and taste similar. By your flawed logic they're the same thing.

Except I used distilled water for one and toilet water for the other.

We should have coffee some time :D

I am loving all of your replies!!! Sugarbear -- the video is great -- I'm going to read more about that study. I don't have any doubt that e-cigs are much, much better for us just based on the way my lungs feel so quickly. I am going to try to gradually lower my nicotine but I'm starting to think that vaping will become my new addiction!

It is kind of silly that anybody thinks this is smoking, but I can see their point I guess. My husband is actually acting better about it and saying that he doesn't want me to go back to cigarettes. He and my brother-in-law both quit smoking cold turkey and think that if they could do it anybody can -- absolutely not true!

Anyway -- thank you all! I'm so glad I found this forum -- it's really helped me to be proud of what I'm doing!
