What Hardware Will Survive Afghanistan?

Hey all,

So, my buddy recently deployed to Afghanistan, and I have just gotten an address for him. He informs me that he has been smoking the hell out of cigarettes because they are .80 a pack. I'd like to help him with his problem, but I don't want to give him something that will break or be an inconvenience. My MVP seems relatively suited to rough wear, but the heat might kill the lipo, and we really don't need that. Which is frustrating, because the recessed button and thick metal construction seem like they wouldn't be too bad with a low reflection finish. It is bulky though. I've read through threads on the topic, but none of them are very recent, so they leave out newer stuff. I can't really spend much over the $50 unless my friends decide to help. Obviously, things like stealth, long battery life, durability, and ease of use are probably king. I'm also not sure what to get for a tank. Glass is probably out, unless i can fashion a way to protect it.

Will let others with more experience with different mods clime in on the hardware. As for a tank, I would consider either the Kanger Aero Mega, or the Mini that have all metal option for the tank...

Elvt and some cheap mechs and rebuildables. Also some egos and cheap clearos or a Pyrex tank setup that is easily Rebuildable like a protank.

Pyrex will be OK in the heat, and should hold up to most drops but that's what the cheap clearos can take care of.

I think finding something that can take the heat will be easier than anything which could be mistaken for stealth, especially under $50 I'm afraid. Biggest thing I would be worrying about would be juice truthfully. Something like 120ml of RY4 from lucky7vapes for $12.99 should last at least a while. As for the mod, just found this one that takes protank heads so, when combined with a couple 18650s, could do well.

I would not worry about batteries overheating. AFAIK, they can all take up to 250 deg F without venting.

Out of your price range, the mod I would consider the toughest is the Billet Box, though I don't know how well the built in tank would handle the heat. I have the feeling it could work though. It is essentially a carto tank. IMO it's temperature change that affects those more than steady high temps.

In your price range, the MVP might be good. The weak point on all of these type mods is the 510 connection. Taking the atty off when not vaping would solve some of that issue.

There is also another mod I've seen that looked quite tough but I can't find it now. It is partially enclosed in a plastic shell that protects it from drops. It's also fairly inexpensive I think. Fasttech may sell it. If this jogs someone's memory maybe we'll get a link to one of them

I have a Provari,(several in fact) but that Firestone will beat it hands down for takin a lickin and keepin on tickin.

A co-worker has one and he regularly takes the tank off of it and lets cars run over it to prove a point.

I have never been there, but I would think just about anything would do fine as long as the user takes care of it. Afghanistan is not another planet. they are still on earth so anything will work. But if you are saying you want something that is really sturdy a mechanical mod would probably be the best bet. There are just fewer parts to fail and easier to care for, and some of them are very inexpensive.

Would he be taking his device out to the field with him? Or would he only use it when on base, etc? I don't really know how it works out there.

I'd assume he'd want the most hassle free device in which case I recommend an MVP with a pyrex carto-tank setup. I'm sure the MVP can handle the heat. And being a hefty, full metal device, it would withstand pretty much any abuse aside from a gunshot (God forbid). I recommend cartos because if one breaks, goes bad, etc, he can just replace it with a new one. If he's in the field and he lands on his MVP, the first thing to break would be the carto. Just swap it for a new one and he's good to vape again. He also won't have to fumble around with building new coils. Just make sure you buy him a ton of cartos because I doubt their availability out there is very high lol

I would recommend a mech, but they're really finicky and getting sand all up in the device sounds like a very bad deal. Same goes with the Reos. With that little window you guys use to squonk, sand can get up in there really easy and start clogging things up and require cleaning. I donno how much time he'd want to dedicate to maintenance, but I don't want a vape giving our troops anymore problems lol.

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't there huge temperature swings in the desert. Also if he were up up in the mountains would the lower pressure affect anything.

I used an MVP with protanks. The Pyrex is pretty durable, but I also put shrink wrap over the glass section. The kind used for electrical connections. And "100 MPH" tape took care of any "shinies".
Worked like a charm.
The long battery life and standardized charging were nice as well. Made it much easier to find a place to "plug in" when out and about.
