What is an atty and why use them?

I'm currently using a Protank but I see mention of attys all over. Is this simply a very small tank that you literally only put in a few drops of juice? And I've gathered you need a drip tip to be able to actually use it. Now if I've got this right, what is the benefit over simply using a tank?

I dripping atty can be used to taste test different juices before committing them into a tank system, whether a clearomizer (which has an atomizer) or carto tank (which uses a cartomizer)

Some of us do vape by dripping as well, using a LR atty or a Rebuildable Atty.

An atomizer simply turns liquid into smoke. A lot of gear has an atomizer built in for simplicity.

Once you get the hang of vaping you'll come to realise that you can make cost savings by switching atomizers when they burn out instead of the whole compartment that the atomizer is inside of.

The protank has an atomizer inside of it. When you got it you took the glass bit and screwed the atomizer into it, when the tank stops working either buy a brand new tank (please don't) or buy replacement atomizers for it

There are different types of atomizers or attys. Tank attys or genesis style, rba's (rebuildable dripping attys), silica attys. I would look them up and get more info or look up videos on youtube.
