looks like corrosion to me. Buff all that crap off to a uniform finish and try again.
How do I buff it off? Tried a file, didn't help.
Any advice on how to get in there at it with a good angle?

Will have to wait until payday, week after next. If that's the only way, I guess well see. Tried using the file again, the corrosion is still there and the rest no longer is smoothy and pretty, but if I can get it to just turn on when batteries are inserted, its worth the hassle. I'm hoping this is why it won't activate anymore...

Have you checked the positive connection between the atty & mod?

The problem is the mod is entirely lifeless. Batteries do not boot it, nor does the turn on turn off lock unlock feature. The led works I know only because of micro USB for updating, it powers fore features, not pass through, but small things like the screen. It works. Batteries don't activate it though.

empryboard(fingernail file) will take that off. may have to remove most of the gold plate to get it all. That looks to be contact burn, due to poor contact with the batteries.... Have you tried another set of batteries. The old ones may be toast, from all the arching they were doing.
